Revealed: 10 dog breeds that cope best with long car rides
Looking for a road trip buddy? Labrador Retrievers, Poodles and Golden Retrievers are among the top dog breeds that can handle long car journeys, new research has found.
Most pets will need to take a car journey at some point (even if it's just to the vets), however some breeds are more eager driving companions than others.
According to the Canine Car Report, conducted by car magazine Auto Trader, Labradors are the best backseat passengers, thanks to their easy-going and compassionate nature. Despite their high-energy levels, these working dogs are always eager to please their owners. Other car-loving pups include French Bulldogs, Dachshunds and Yorkshire Terriers.
Chihuahuas, one of the world's smallest dogs, are also more likely to feel comfortable in the car as they will have more space available to them. The researchers explain: "Despite having a feisty temperament, they are very quick-witted and easily trained, so even if your Chihuahua doesn't take well to cars at first, they will quickly get used to it."
The team add: "We have come a long way from letting our dogs in the car only when they have an appointment at the vets. Now, our furry friends travel everywhere with us. From cross-country road trips and driving to staycation cottages to simply joining us to meet friends for a pub lunch - our pet dogs are spending more time than ever with us in the car."
If you're heading on a road trip, remember to suitably restrain your pet so that they cannot distract you whilst driving. A dog car seat, seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or guard are all good ways to keep animals safe in cars. For long journeys, frequent stops (and snacks) are recommended but it is also essential to exercise the dog as much as possible before the journey to help them exert some excitement.
