Ring in Fourth of July week with this annual downtown concert

Some people might want to take it easy heading into the Fourth of July holiday. Others might want to pack their weekend schedules full of fun.

The latter can find plenty of things to do this weekend and into next week, including taking in the annual Independence Day Carillon Concert at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum on Monday.

Here’s a look at that and some of the other fun things happening around Wichita this weekend:

Carillon bells

Noon-1 p.m. Monday, Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum, 204 S. Main

The 2023-2024 Bloomfield Carillon Concert series, which started with a Thanksgiving installment, concludes on Monday with an Independence Day edition. Musician JuleAnn Troutman will play the bells from the fifth floor of the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum clock tower from noon to 1 p.m. The bells can best be heard right outside the museum. Admission is free.

Wichita Pride Parade, Festival

11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, in and around Century II, 225 W. Douglas

Wichita Pride Month continues this weekend with the Wichita Pride Festival and parade, both of which happen on Saturday. The one-mile parade, which starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Historica County Courthouse, will proceed down Main to Century II. The Wichita Pride Festival also will start at 11:30 a.m. inside Century IIs Exhibition Hall. It will last until 4 p.m. and will include entertainment, vendors, food, kid’s activities and more. Shop & Grub summer edition

5-8 p.m. Friday, Exploration Place Entrance Plaza, 300 N. McLean

Another installment of Festive ICT’s market Shop & Grub is set for 5 to 10 p.m. Friday outside of Exploration Place. The event will be set up on the museum’s entrance plaza and will feature more than 40 vendors selling vintage clothing, jewelry, home goods, accessories and more. Food and adult beverages will be for sale. Admission is free.

Brooks & Dunn tribute band

9 p.m. Saturday, Wichita Union Stockyards, 6251 W. MacArthur

They’re not actually Brooks & Dunn, but tribute band Dunn & Brooks gets pretty close. The act will perform at Wichita’s Union Stockyards starting at 9 p.m. on Saturday. The set will include Brooks & Dunn hits like “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” and “Play Something Country.” Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 9 p.m. General admission tickets are $15 at www.kwlsradio.com

James McMurty in concert

8 p.m. Saturday, Wave, 650 E. Second

Americana singer/songwriter James McMurtry, known for songs like “Canola Fields,” will perform on Saturday at Wichita’s Wave venue. His opening act will be Betty Soo. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. Advance tickets are $25 at waveict.com, but they’ll go up to $39.43 the day of the show.

WAM Summer Film Series

6:30 p.m. Friday, Wichita Art Museum, 1400 Museum Blvd.

The Wichita Art Museum’s Summer Film Series, intended as a celebration of the museum’s exhibition “Annie Leibovitz/Work,” continues on Friday with a screening of the film “Carol,” which stars Cate Blanchett as a woman engaging in an illicit romance. Each film in the series is related to a photograph by Leibovitz, and each screening includes commentary from a local film expert. This week, it will be Caitlyn Cody, a Wichita-based cinematographer and commercial editor. The film series, which continues through July, is being put on in conjunction with Tallgrass Film Association. The movie, which is rated R, starts at 6:30 p.m., and admission is free.
