Rolex Goes Platinum with Its Handsome 1908 Dress Watch
Rolex is most often associated with its iconic tool watches: The Submariner helps divers monitor oxygen consumption; the Daytona allows drivers to measure lap intervals; the GMT tracks multiple time zones for travelers. However, the Swiss luxury brand also excels at designing elegant, less rugged timepieces meant to make a statement under the cuff of a dress shirt rather than at the top of Mount Everest. The new 1908—named for the year founder Hans Wilsdorf registered the Rolex trademark in Switzerland—features a 39mm platinum case, an icy blue rice-grain dial, a leather strap, and a small seconds subdial. This is the second release from the Perpetual collection (following the dissolution of Rolex’s Cellini line), which debuted at the 2023 Watches & Wonders trade show in Geneva, after the introduction of two 1908 models in 18-karat white and yellow gold. With a self-winding movement and high legibility, it shows that form still follows function, even in a tuxedo.
