Rory Feek in March 2024; Hopie FeekHopie Feek is opening up about how discovering that Rory Feek isn't her biological father has changed her life.
Hopie, 36, exclusively tells PEOPLE that the days since the news about the country singer, 59, not being her biological father went public have been "hard" due to "all the negative opinions of people online."
"But getting to know [my birth father] B.C. for the last six months has been really special!" she says. "It’s also amazing to know I’m not alone in all this. Lots of people have had similar experiences with DNA testing."
Hopie also notes she recently joined a support group and is learning more about her biological parents.
"I love learning how much I have in common with my biological parents," she tells PEOPLE. "[He] and I both have huskies!! B.C. and my mom are both wonderful people!"
While Hopie believes that "healing" will take time, she has "a lot of support from the people around me."
On Tuesday, Feb. 11, Hopie wrote on Instagram that she was disappointed by a blog post shared earlier that day by Rory, in which he shared personal details of the family’s history, including those of her mother, who was previously married to the star.
Growing up alongside her sister Heidi, 38, Hopie believed Rory, who raised the girls after splitting from their mom, was her dad. However, on Feb. 8, she revealed in an Instagram video that a recent 23andMe test determined her biological father was actually a man named B.C., with whom she’s “gotten really close” during the last six months.
“I’ve never experienced unconditional love like that before,” she said in the clip of meeting B.C.
Three days after Hopie shared the news publicly, Rory discussed the topic in a blog titled “A Different Dad.” He said he’d been getting ready for the day on Feb. 6 when Hopie called him out of the blue asking to speak in person. The pair hadn’t seen each other in a year, and Rory wrote that her call “felt like an answer to a prayer.”
At the cemetery where Rory’s late wife Joey is buried, Hopie shared with him the results of her 23andMe test, which she’d taken after her mother said there was a good chance Rory was not her biological father.

Hopie FeekWhile Rory didn't know, he wasn’t entirely surprised by the news.
"I’m disappointed and sad that it took three decades to learn this. But the truth is… I mostly hurt for Hopie,” he wrote.
That same day, Hopie expressed her frustration with Rory’s blog post on Instagram, which she called "extremely disappointing."
“I shared my story because I couldn’t keep the secret all to myself anymore," she said. "I’m really not a public person, but because Rory is, my private life becomes content for his fans (who are often unkind online).”
