The Ruibuilt Range Stretches With Spring 2025

What’s the difference between a human body, a chair or a building?

Not much as far as Chinese designer Rui Zhou is concerned. As a reminder that the knit ensembles of her label Ruibuilt are meant to fit many shapes, there were small objects wrapped in filmy stretch fabrics around the runway.

She also showed images of a multi-story installation dressing the building of the Mirage25 concept store in Hangzhou, China.

“I don’t want to focus only on the human body because [my work] is not only about skin,” she said before her spring show. “It’s really helped me to expand my idea [beyond] the body, to see it as a large sculpture.”

Conceptual as this sounds, Zhou said her interest still lies in being practical.

“Practicality doesn’t mean boring,” she was quick to add. “It means you have more possibilities to try on these pieces and see how you can [fit them] in your daily life — daytime, nighttime or even in space.”

To that effect, Zhou supplemented her filmy bodysuits with ideas sure to attract those who ease into the label’s body-positive ethos. There were slinky silk dresses, flowy pajama sets and jersey separates, but she also added slipped buttons into the body-hugging spiral construction of a gown.

Congruent with the idea of loving oneself to the fullest, the designer collaborated with Chinese sex toy company Osuga for a limited-edition item.

“We always celebrate the imperfection of humans and we’d love for everyone to embrace themselves, to love their body and love themselves,” she said. “This is the way that they can try.”
