Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died at the age of 87. The longtime justice and liberal icon died on Friday from "complications of metastatic pancreas cancer," the Supreme Court said.

“Our nation has lost a jurist of historic stature,” Chief Justice John Roberts said in a statement. “We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her—a tireless and resolute champion of justice.”

After President Bill Clinton appointed her to the court in 1993, Ginsburg became known as one of the Supreme Court's stalwart liberals—and prior to her career as a Supreme Court justice, she made her name as a lawyer campaigning for gender equality. In her later years she became an icon for liberals, earning the nickname "Notorious RBG," and becoming the subject of a documentary, RBG, and a narrative film, On the Basis of Sex.

As recently as July, she had released a statement indicating that she was in good health, and able to perform the tasks required of a Supreme Court justice. "I have often said I would remain a member of the Court as long as I can do the job full steam," she said. " I remain fully able to do that."

In her final days, as her condition worsened, Ginsburg dictated a statement to her granddaughter, Clara Spera. Per NPR, it read, "My most fervent wish is that i I will not be replaced until a new president is installed."
