The Queen celebrated the 150th anniversary of British supermarket Sainsbury's with a birthday cake made by Claire Ptak - the baker behind Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding cake.

On Wednesday 22nd May, the Queen payed a visit to a pop-up Sainsbury's store in London's Covent Garden. Her Majesty met 33 employees, learnt more about the history, cut into the delicious citrus and blossom cake, and was given a demonstration of how to use a self-service till.

While being shown how to use the till, the Queen asked "you can't cheat then?" reports The Metro.

She was also shown a new shopping app, which she called "an interesting tool" during the demonstration.

Customers will be able to buy a slice of the delicious birthday cake in the Sainsbury's cafes over the next nine weeks. The cakes sold will be made using the same ingredients as Claire's: fresh lime, orange blossom and crème fraîche. They're set to sell out fast.

"It is yet another great honour to be chosen to make such an important cake for an iconic British brand. Sainsbury’s pioneered the sale of butter in this country along with milk, eggs, and crème fraîche. These are all ingredients that we take for granted today but that we could not bake without," Claire Ptak told ITV.

The East London-based pastry chef - who heads up Violet Cakes - first opened her cafe back in 2010. Since then, Claire famously created the lemon and elderflower wedding cake the Duke and Duchess of Sussex enjoyed on their wedding day back in May 2018.

John James and Mary Ann Sainsbury first opened the store on Drury Lane in 1869, where they sold only butter, milk and eggs - three kitchen staples families needed to create everyday meals.
