You Have to See This Kid’s French-Fry (!) Inspired Headboard
Planning a kid’s bedroom design around their interests is completely normal. For example, a child loved bugs — so his parents hung 3D insects on his walls. Another parent painted the bedroom walls exactly the way her kids asked her to do. A child’s private space is a room that should cultivate creativity, growth, and personal adventure — so it makes sense that the decor should reflect their hobbies and dreams.
However, some parents take a child’s interests and emphasize them in the most fun and incredible ways, and creative director and interior designer Alicia Savin is one of those folks. She was tasked with designing her 10-year-old son, Ben’s, bedroom in their colorful and jazzy Canada home. So, she looked at an activity he loved to do.
“Ben loves to cook, and eat, so I thought it would be fun to design a room around this passion of his,” Alicia shares. “The bed inspiration came from a similar bed we found on Pinterest from the 70s. I believe it was an art installation, but we ran with the idea as I thought it was hilarious and knew Ben would appreciate it.”
You might be wondering about the bed in question. Well, it’s shaped like a large french fry box from McDonald’s (and was actually modeled after a container from the brand to ensure accuracy). Alicia devoted much time to planning the bed’s layout to ensure it was fun yet functional. One of the most challenging elements was incorporating the scoop in the middle while ensuring it wasn’t low enough that Ben’s pillow would fall through.
“We made several adjustments to ensure it functioned well as a bed while maintaining its yummy appearance,” Alicia explains. “The bed is elevated enough for Ben to store toys underneath and is widened by an extra inch on each side to make tucking in his duvet easier.”
Even though Alicia took full design control of designing the bed (and overall room), it’s no surprise that Ben absolutely loves it. “Every night when I tuck him into bed, I giggle because the idea of tucking your son into a french fry container is very funny,” Alicia admits.
And while most of the bed was created by Lower Coast Building Group, the actual french fries are a DIY project. Alicia used an electric bread knife to cut fry shapes out of a foam mattress. The french fry bed is complemented by a hamburger stool, ketchup packet pillow, food-inspired wallpaper, and an ice cream night light. (The entire room looks good enough to eat.)
Ben loves spending time in his room, and Alicia will usually find him building Legos on the floor or drawing at his desk. Alicia appreciates how the bed is unique and fun while also being a functional space for Ben to sprawl out. While the room is based around fun, it has led to some jesting.
“Besides sleeping in a french fry container, the thing Ben likes most about this room is taking out the foam fries and using them to fight with his brother,” Alicia admits. “I dislike this the most about the room.”
You’ll likely be pleased to know that this isn’t the only super fun room in Alicia’s home. To see more, visit the full home tour on Apartment Therapy.
