Severely Matted 6-Year-Old Maltese Finds Forever Home After Getting a Drastic Makeover: See the Before and After Photos

Talk about an extreme makeover!
Reggie, a six-year-old Maltese, recently got a new lease on life when the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) shed his matted coat and helped him find his forever home.
The canine, the AHS said in a press release obtained by PEOPLE, was surrendered to Emergency Animal Medical Technicians by his previous owner in mid-December 2024, when he was severely matted.
“When Reggie first came in, he was just covered in mats. It was basically one entire mat,” AHS Groomer Amitie Davis said in a statement.

“Reggie’s case was definitely the worst I’ve groomed. It was so thick and the top layer had so much feces on it that it was hard to get through," she continued. "It was a very long process, multiple people had hands-on for getting his mats off.”
After Reggie's matted fur was shaved off, the AHS said the pup "weighed in at more than a pound lighter" than the original 13 lbs. he was listed as when he first arrived.
The AHS said that Reggie was also evaluated in the organization's Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital, where he underwent a neutering surgery and was treated for minor wounds that were caused by his matted fur.

"As you can see in his before and after photos, Reggie is now bright-eyed and as cute as ever with his head held high with confidence thanks to a nice spa treatment with AHS’ groomer to remove his matted fur, along with extra special treatment with a bubble bath and a nice sweater to help keep him warm," the AHS said, per the release.
Reggie has since been adopted and is already living in his forever home, following the care he received from the AHS.
"Reggie’s story is a perfect illustration of Maricopa County’s animal welfare crisis, which is at an all-time high," the AHS said. "Last year, AHS cared for more than 22,000 sick, injured and abused pets and fielded almost 100,000 calls from the public seeking resources through its Pet Resource Center."
