Bettor loses $25K in biggest UFC upset since Rousey-Holm

Few people had faith in UFC flyweight Shana Dobson heading into her Saturday night fight against rising star Mariya Agapova.

The 31-year-old Dobson held a career record of just 3-4, and had lost her last three fights. Her most recent fight lasted only 40 seconds before a knockout loss against Priscila Cachoeira. Contrast that to the 9-1 Agapova on a three-fight win streak and it’s hard to see this fight happening had Agapova not specifically called out Dobson.

Las Vegas reflected that viewpoint entering Saturday, marking Dobson as a +800 underdog and Agapova a -1429 favorite, per BetMGM.

And then, well this happened:

That right there is the sound of a +800 underdog cashing, the biggest upset UFC has seen since Ronda Rousey’s reign of dominance over the sport ended in shocking fashion against Holly Holm in 2015, according to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

Good thing no one decided to bet several thousands of dollars on Agapova thinking she was a sure thing against an opponent on a downturn, right? Right?

Oh no.

The moral of this story: Never expect a sure thing in sports betting, especially in the Octagon.
