After She's Disinvited from Family Vacation, Mother-in-Law Books Hotel Nearby Anyway, Causing Serious Tension with Her Son
A mother seeks the advice of the Reddit community after she booked a stay near her son's family vacation spot after being disinvited
A planned family vacation has turned sour after a man disinvited his mother due to tension between her side of the family and his fiancée, whom he’s been with for 6 years. The mother is seeking support from the Reddit community, asking if she was wrong for booking a hotel near her son and daughter-in-law’s vacation spot after being uninvited from their trip.
The drama began when the woman’s 30-year-old son mentioned an upcoming vacation with his fiancée and her extended family. Eager to spend time with her son, the mother inquired about joining the trip.
Her son initially was on board with her attending alongside some of his other family members. “My son mentioned there might be enough room at the house they’re staying at,” she recounts. “I told him that sounded great and asked him to let me know the costs for everyone attending.”

However, as the plans unraveled, the son’s fiancée expressed that she didn’t want her mother-in-law to join because she'd previously missed their engagement dinner. “He explained that his fiancée didn’t feel comfortable with us coming,” the mother shares. “She was upset because I didn’t attend her engagement dinner last year to meet her side of the family, which she felt would make it awkward to share the vacation rental.”

The situation was further complicated by a recent family tragedy. “I should have noted that my daughter-in-law's mom passed away and since then our relationship has been feeling more strained. I did not attend the funeral and I reached out to my son because I don’t want to bother her.”
Despite being uninvited, the woman decided to book a nearby hotel anyway. However, her decision only escalated the tension between the two women.
“I told my son it was fine, but I ended up booking a hotel about 15 miles away from where they’re staying,” the woman shares. “I also told my son he didn’t have to worry about making time to see us. Now, my daughter-in-law is upset because she feels that we’re still somehow taking away from their trip.”
The poster notes she stayed in the area because they had already booked excursions. Many users, however, have sided with the fiancée in this situation. “I understand why the dil doesn't want you to go, if it's been 6 years and you haven't met her family,” writes one user.
Another states, “I mean… if I had been with your son for six years and engaged, and you never took the time to meet my family or anyone close to me, I wouldn’t feel comfortable going on vacation with you either.”
