Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith reportedly worked hard to keep their children "shielded" from marriage issues, including their brief period of separation.
"It was never chaotic in the house. They shielded a lot of what they were going through from their kids," a source told People.
The longtime couple recently shared on an episode of Red Table Talk that Pinkett Smith began a relationship with musician August Alsina while they were separated.
Even during a period of separation during their marriage, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith made sure that their children were never caught in the middle of marital distress.
Per People, the actors intentionally "shielded" their two children—Jaden Smith, 22, and Willow Smith, 19 (Will also shares a son, Trey Smith, 27, with his ex-wife)—from the drama involved with their brief split. The longtime couple revealed during a shocking episode of Red Table Talk, Pinkett Smith's Facebook Watch series, that the pair temporarily separated years ago, with Pinkett Smith sparking up a brief relationship with musician August Alsina during that time.
"The kids have always been a uniting factor for them. And it was never chaotic in the house. They shielded a lot of what they were going through from their kids. In bad times Jada would just be gone a lot," a source told the outlet.
"From the beginning, their issues haven't been any different than most other couples. They're two different people trying to make it, and on top of it there's this huge spotlight on them. Up until now they've done a great job of being able to keep their issues private," the source continued. "But their problems aren't unique. They got together pretty young and they've grown and changed and adapted. They learn more about each other every day."
Reportedly, the Suicide Squad actor felt "more of the pressure" to retain his marriage to Pinkett Smith over the years, especially as a beloved celebrity couple. "People are always going to grow and change, but most don't have the world watching their every move while they do that," another source told People.
