Lip balms are having a moment in beauty. Case in point: Acclaimed director Sofia Coppola has teamed up with skincare darling Augustinus Bader on a trio of sheer tinted lip balms—a new staple in the handbags of cool girls everywhere. Out now, the balms are a must-have for cinephiles, the beauty-obsessed, or really, anyone with lips.

“My favourite sheer lipstick was from Monoprix in Paris, but then they discontinued it. I had a few last ones that I hoarded,” Coppola tells Bazaar. “I am a fan of Augustinus Bader; I love The Rich Cream and the [original] Lip Balm. I wrote a note to Professor Bader asking if they would agree to make my favourite tint with their balm. I was happy when he said yes!”

This launch marks Bader’s first step into colour cosmetics, following the release of a tinted priming moisturiser with Victoria Beckham back in 2019. Available in three shades—a deep pink, a punchy coral, and warm plum—The Tinted Balm nourishes and hydrates lips with shea butter, vitamin E, and candelilla wax, and protects with the brand’s signature TFC8 patented technology. “The discontinued Monoprix lip balm was the prototype for Shade 1,” Coppola says. “The idea is that you can just put it on without a mirror. Bader’s lip balm packaging looks nice in your bag. It’s more updated, a little more grown-up and chic.”

The Academy Award–winning writer-director of Priscilla, Marie Antoinette, and Lost in Translation is no stranger to the beauty world. She has worked on famous fragrance campaigns with both Marc Jacobs and Dior in the past, but is also just a fan of discovering new products. “I love Bader. I also like de Mamiel; I have a face spray from her that smells so good. She also makes an aromatherapy oil called Altitude, which I use on airplanes.” Coppola also collects new products while she travels. “There’s this camellia oil hair cream, Oshima Tsubaki, that I always get when I go to Japan, but you can get it here [in New York City] now at the Japanese market,” she says. She also mentions Beckham and Bader’s Cell Rejuvenating Priming Moisturiser as a favourite, as well as the Rejuvenating Facial at the Skin Lab by Augustinus Bader in New York City (which is also available in London). “Fashion and beauty are my way to relax and indulge,” she says.
