Sofia Vergara Just Shared Why She and Joe Manganiello Got Divorced
They separated after a decade together.
Last year was unofficially the year of the celebrity breakup, and one of 2023's casualties was Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello. The two actors filed for divorce after a decade together, shocking many fans when court documents revealed "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for divorce. Vague as that seemed, the Modern Family star and Emmy Award nominee revealed today that the reason for her breakup was related to Manganiello's desire to have children. She explained that she had no desire to "be an old mom" and that she was, in fact, ready to be a grandmother, not a mother all over again.
"I'm newly divorced from my second husband, who I was with for 10 years. My marriage broke up because my husband was younger," she said during an interview with El País. Vergara is 51 and Manganiello is 47. "He wanted to have kids and I didn't want to be an old mom. I feel it's not fair to the baby. I respect whoever does it, but that's not for me anymore."
Vergara has a son, Manolo, from a previous relationship. She went on to say that at this moment, she's open to a new relationship, but that whoever comes along "has to come with his own children."
"I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I'm ready to be a grandmother, not a mother," she continued. "So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children. I'm almost in menopause; it's the natural way of things. When my son becomes a dad, let him bring the baby to me for a while and then I'll give it back to him and go on with my life; that's what I have to do."

Vergara finished by saying that she's "very fulfilled" by her professional life at the moment. Her new Netflix show, Griselda, is set to premiere on the streamer Jan. 25. Of course, fans will remember her as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on Modern Family and since then, she's been at the judges' table on America's Got Talent alongside Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel.
"I've done much more in my career than I ever dreamed of. I never dreamed of being an actress. It was an accident," she said. "I've been [judging] America's Got Talent for four years, a show where I have a lot of fun ... I have my own clothing and beauty brand. I can't even think of complaining about anything."
Vergara also revealed that she's single during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. After her divorce, she was briefly linked to Dr. Justin Saliman.
"I'm single now, so in New York there are more people," she said. "There's not only actors or writers or directors, I think there's a bigger [pool]. I'm going to spend more time in New York."
