Sophie Grégoire Trudeau is opening up about her separation from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a new interview with Vogue.

Earlier this week, the outlet published an in-depth article about Grégoire Trudeau ahead of the April 23 release of her book Closer Together: Knowing Ourselves, Loving Each Other. The book is a memoir of sorts that features interviews with Dr. Gabor Maté, a physician, author and addictions expert; Terrence Real, a therapist and relationship expert; and Liz Plank, an author and award-winning journalist. Grégoire Trudeau told Vogue that the book was written before she and Trudeau decided to end their 18-year marriage, explaining why it reportedly contains no mention of their separation.

The 48-year-old former journalist said that immediately after the couple announced their break up in August 2023, the entire family went on vacation together and celebrated the holidays as a unit.

"We don't even have a parental sharing plan," she said. "We go along with the kids' schedules, and we keep each other posted."

In the interview, Grégoire Trudeau is painted as warm, fun-loving and emotional — reportedly welling up up with tears several times. Although she puts on a brave face publicly, Grégoire Trudeau said there are still struggles. "I think it hurts me for the kids," she said. The couple share 16-year-old Xavier, 15-year-old Ella and 10-year-old Hadrien. Grégoire Trudeau said she worries about the "emotional heritage" the separation will be passing down to them.

Grégoire Trudeau's mission moving forward is to help the children transition to their new family structure.

"You can heal without hatred, without division, without blame." she said. "I'm not perfect. It takes two to tango, and I think we both acknowledge that."

She spoke of her goal for her relationship with her former husband and her goal to have "parallel paths" now that they're no longer walking the same path together. "Parallel paths while having a family is possible when there's love and respect," she said. "You can still nourish each other in different ways."

Grégoire Trudeau, who recently formed her own communications company, Under Your Light Communication, was vague about the role she'll play in Trudeau's campaign for re-election in 2025.

"I am concerned and acutely interested in our future," she said. "But then again, I can only do what I can to help. I know how I can give, and that's what I'm going to focus on."
