This Space-Saving Sleeper Sofa Has a Built-In Side Table (Perfect for Tiny Living Rooms!)

Striped wallpaper in eclectic living room.

As Apartment Therapy’s resident personal shopper, one of my favorite things that happens when I go on store visits is finding a piece of furniture with a cool extra feature, whether that’s built-in storage, a charging port, or cup holders. The more inconspicuous it is at first, the better! A lot of times, though, I find these features in power recliners or sleeper sofas that aren’t the most stylish examples of living room seating.

Although I think power reclining sofas still have a ways to go in that department, sleeper sofas have definitely improved in terms of looks. Rove Concepts’ Dresden sleeper is a perfect example. Not only is it a great pick for small spaces, but it also has a few different features that allow it to function as three pieces of furniture in one. If you’re after a sleek, multipurpose couch that you can’t find anywhere else, look no further. You might even find yourself never wanting to get up from it!

What Is the Dresden Sleeper Sofa?

Upon first glance, the Dresden looks like any other modern sofa, with clean lines, a rectangular silhouette, and chic gray upholstery. But when you look closer, you’ll notice that one arm is wider than the other and that it has a wooden accent. Indeed, one side of this sofa doubles as a side table, thanks to a removable veneer tray that blends in seamlessly with the rest of the design. Even better, the Dresden also unfolds into a sleeper — simply pull on the concealed tab to open the bench-style seat cushion, which transforms into a 74” by 53” sleep surface. Springs and polyester-wrapped foam provide comfort and support regardless of whether you’re sitting on the seat cushion or lying on the sleep surface. Additionally, a kiln-dried hardwood frame prevents sagging and provides optimal durability. You’ll be happy to learn that, in addition to the side walnut table tray, the Dresden also comes with two throw pillows and a washable mesh mattress cover, so your sheets never go directly onto the sleeper’s surface. You can shop this piece in two in-stock felt colors — a medium gray and a bone hue — or 27 custom fabric colors.

Why You’ll Love the Dresden Sleeper Sofa

My favorite thing about a good sleeper sofa is when you can’t tell it’s a sleeper by initially looking at it. That’s true of the Dresden; it looks like a contemporary living room showpiece with comfy but elegantly shaped cushions. Despite its good looks, the Dresden isn’t a model you have to be extra careful with. It’s available in several durable performance fabrics that easily release stains and stand up to everyday use. No matter your interior design aesthetic, you’ll be able to tailor the sofa to the rest of your living space. If you wanted to, you could also place it in your home office or a spare bedroom; the Dresden’s 88-inch width makes it neither too large nor too small for most apartments. And the next time you have overnight guests, they’ll have a comfortable and convenient place to crash.

It’s also important to consider this sleeper’s low profile. At 24 inches tall, it’s not the easiest to climb in and out of. But that’s the only design detail that doesn’t prioritize functionality. From its fold-out sleep surface to its built-in side table, the Dresden is a place from which you can carry out a range of activities, including napping, working, eating, and just hanging out. It basically eliminates the need for two additional pieces of furniture — what could be better than that?
