‘Squid Game 3’: Release Date, Cast and Details Netflix

Squid Game series 2 spoilers below

It’s a bit of a kick in the teeth to wait three years for a follow-up series to the hyper-violent, dystopian horror Squid Game, only to be left with yet another big cliffhanger. It does, however, set up things very nicely for the third entry into the trilogy that director Hwang Dong-hyuk has already promised fans.

And, as viewers are probably still reeling from that frenetic shoot-out in the final episode of series two, let’s take a moment to think about what the ending meant for the third series. Here’s everything we know about Squid Game 3 so far, including the potential release date, trailer, cast and plot:

Squid Game 3: Release date

Thankfully, we don’t need to wait three more years to find out the fate of Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-ja). Director Hwang announced in August 2024: “The fierce clash between [Gi-hun and Front Man’s] two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year.”

That’s next year, as in 2025, and while no exact date has been given to when it will hit Netflix, our guess is that they’ll repeat the festive scheduling of this year, and stream it on Boxing Day, depending on how good viewing figures were for Squid Game 2.

It’s also believed to have been filmed back-to-back with season two, which is why there’s a much shorter wait for season 3.

Squid Game 3: Trailer

There’s no trailer as yet – unless you count the enigmatic post-credits scene, which sees contestants behind the Red Light, Green Light doll, who also now apparently has a boyfriend – but we will keep you posted as to when that appears.

Squid Game 3: Cast

Our main man, Gi-hun, will obviously be back, as will the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) as they faced off against each other at the end of series two. Policeman Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) is also likely to return, as his brother is the Front Man, though it’s unclear if he will ever manage to find Gi-hun and the Squid Game island, as he’s completely unaware that the Captain has been double crossing him. The Captain could also too return.

But, apart from a few solitary contestants (including Marine-man Dae-ho, the mother-and-son duo, the crypto-influencer and his pregnant ex-girlfriend) who we can assume are still in the game, most of the other characters have been killed off. Of course, Hwang may well bring in some new, shady characters for season three – we’ll just have to wait for any updates.

Squid Game 3: Plot

It looks likely that season three will see Gi-hun confronting the Front Man, though it’s unclear how much confronting he can do with several guns pointing at his head, and with most of his insurgent mates all lying dead on the Escher-like hallways.

But the Front Man has kept him alive – even playing in the game beside Gi-hun as player 001 – so it feels like he has some sort of affinity with him now. The question is, what will he do with Gi-hun? And will the games continue? Then there’s Hwang Jun-ho, who is nothing if not dedicated to the search of finding the island – but as he thinks his brother is dead, what will happen if he comes face-to-face with him again? And will we ever get any answers as to why all this is happening? Here’s hoping that was the last cliffhanger of the series at the end of season two.

Squid Game 4?

Hwang has said season three will be the final series of Squid Game, however there are already plans afoot for an (entirely unnecessary in our opinion!) English-language remake of the series. Deadline reported that David Fincher was eyeing up the idea, with the publication noting that his film The Game, starring Michael Douglas and Sean Penn “also revolves around real-life people becoming unwitting participants in a diabolical game.”
