Star athlete blasted over daughter's $2,400 iPad

Former England football star Steven Gerrard spared no expense when it came to his daughter Lourdes’s sixth birthday. The dad-of-four splashed out a whopping $2,400 on an 18-carat-gold rose-gold iPad for his daughter, before proudly showing it off on Instagram.

“Thanks @idesigngold for Lourdes 18k rose gold iPad with deep engraving,” the football star captioned the photo.

The device is marked with a special message, “Lots of love, Mum and Dad.”

The gesture, however, was met with a wave of criticism for Gerrard, with fans accusing him of flaunting his wealth.

“I really like this couple and always thought he was very down-to-earth! But this is just so ridiculous for a six-year-old! What will she expect to receive next year?” commented an onlooker.

“Flaunting wealth is obscene, expected better from Steve G,” wrote another.

“I love Stevie, but holy hell, this is stupid for a six-year-old when so many are going without food,” added a third.

Others stepped in to defend the millionaire, saying that if he was going to splurge it might as well be on his kids.

“It’s up to Stevie to spend whatever he wants on his children, he does a lot for charity,” one stated.

“I’d do the same if I had the money. I wouldn’t feel a drop of guilt about it. He’s earned it,” wrote another.

Where do you stand of the matter? Do high income families earn the right to spoil on their kids? Or, is teaching the value of a dollar every parents duty?
