11 new movies, series to watch in Canada this September: Netflix, Disney+ and more
As September rolls in, streaming services are setting up for fall with a whole slate of films and TV shows to love.
Netflix is releasing the highly anticipated film "Blonde," starring Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe, while Amazon Prime Video is launching their much awaited sci-fi series "The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power."
Disney+ will be releasing two big launches on Disney+ Day on September 8: "Pinocchio," starring Tom Hanks, along with Marvel's hit "Thor: Love and Thunder."

Week of Sept. 1
The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power
The long-awaited Amazon Original Series brings the heroic legends of Middle-earth's history to the screen. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged. Streams Sept. 2 on Amazon Prime Video.
Islands
This coming-of-middle-age film follows a timid Filipino immigrant struggling with the care of an elderly parent while managing his first experience with love. Streams Sept. 1 on CBC Gem.
Week of Sept. 5
Cobra Kai: Season 5
As Terry leads Cobra Kai into a new regime, Daniel, Johnny and an old ally join forces in a battle that goes way beyond the mat. Streams Sept. 9 on Netflix.
Pinocchio
This movie is a live action and CGI retelling of the beloved tale of a wooden puppet who embarks on a thrilling adventure to become a real boy. Tom Hanks stars as Geppetto, the woodcarver who builds and treats Pinocchio (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) as if he were his real son. Streams Sept. 8 on Disney+.
Thor: Love and Thunder
To combat the threat of an intergalactic god-killer, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. A Jazzman's Blues
Tyler Perry's sweeping tale of forbidden love unspools 40 years of secrets and lies while set to the soundtrack of blues music in the Deep South. Streams Sept. 23 on Netflix.
Sidney
From producer Oprah Winfrey, this revealing documentary honours the legendary Sidney Poitier and his legacy as an iconic actor, filmmaker and activist at the centre of Hollywood and the Civil Rights Movement. Streams Sept. 23 on Apple TV+.
On the Come Up
Bri (Jamila C. Gray) is a gifted 16-year-old rapper who attempts to take the battle rap scene by storm in order to lift up her family and do right by the legacy of her father – a local hip hop legend whose career was cut short by gang violence. Streams Sept. 23 on Paramount+.
Week of Sept. 26
Blonde
Based on the bestselling novel by Joyce Carol Oates, this boldly reimagined fictional portrait of Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe stars Ana de Armas as the Hollywood siren. Streams Sept. 28 on Netflix.
Hocus Pocus 2
This haunting sequel to the Halloween cult classic brings back the delightfully wicked Sanderson sisters for more comedic mayhem 29 years after the events of 1993's "Hocus Pocus." Streams Sept. 30 on Disney+.
The Greatest Beer Run Ever
To show support for his neighbourhood friends serving in Vietnam, Chickie Donohue (Zac Efron) decides to do something totally outrageous: travel to the frontline by himself to bring the soldiers a little piece of home — their favourite can of American beer. Streams on Sept 30 on Apple TV+.
