11 new movies, series to watch in Canada this September: Netflix, Disney+ and more

From the "Hocus Pocus" sequel nearly 30 years in the making to Netflix's Marilyn Monroe biopic, September is filled with new titles to stream.

As September rolls in, streaming services are setting up for fall with a whole slate of films and TV shows to love.

Netflix is releasing the highly anticipated film "Blonde," starring Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe, while Amazon Prime Video is launching their much awaited sci-fi series "The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power."

Disney+ will be releasing two big launches on Disney+ Day on September 8: "Pinocchio," starring Tom Hanks, along with Marvel's hit "Thor: Love and Thunder."

Week of Sept. 1

The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power

The long-awaited Amazon Original Series brings the heroic legends of Middle-earth's history to the screen. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged. Streams Sept. 2 on Amazon Prime Video.

Islands

This coming-of-middle-age film follows a timid Filipino immigrant struggling with the care of an elderly parent while managing his first experience with love. Streams Sept. 1 on CBC Gem.

Week of Sept. 5

Pinocchio

This movie is a live action and CGI retelling of the beloved tale of a wooden puppet who embarks on a thrilling adventure to become a real boy. Tom Hanks stars as Geppetto, the woodcarver who builds and treats Pinocchio (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) as if he were his real son. Streams Sept. 8 on Disney+.

Thor: Love and Thunder

To combat the threat of an intergalactic god-killer, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Streams Sept. 8 on Disney+.

On the Come Up
