A Super Rare Frank Lloyd Wright Home Is on the Market — Take a Look Inside
If you’ve ever dreamed of living in a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, you’re far from alone.
Each building’s mid-century modern finishes, open living floor plans, and expansive, integrated windows that bridge the home’s interior with the outdoors (while also bringing in plenty of natural light) have made the homes an iconic part of the history of home architecture — and the rarity of them hitting the market makes them extremely valuable.
But now, this dream could become a reality for one Frank Lloyd Wright enthusiast, as a rare Usonian modernist home is on the market right now for just the second time ever — and it’s absolutely gorgeous on the inside and outside.
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Weisblat House in Michigan, a 1948 home that sits on a one-acre lot, is on the market for $2,250,000.
“Situated in the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed The Acres subdivision, the Weisblat House is surrounded by other Frank Lloyd Wright homes and nature while remaining within reach of Kalamazoo and Western Michigan University,” says Realtor Brian Kirksey of Ethos Real Estate in a statement to SaveWright.org.
The home is highly valuable — and is also even more rare than you might think. For one, it’s in the rare Usonian style, which is much less common than Wright’s Prairie-style homes (only 60 exist in total).
Built in 1951, the 11-room, two-bedroom home has many typical Usonian features like a single-story floor plan, natural wooden and stone features throughout, a car park instead of a closed garage, and an L-shaped layout with the two bedrooms on the opposite end of the common spaces.
However, the 2,429-square foot home is significantly bigger than a lot of Usonian homes (according to Architectural Digest, most were around 1,200 square feet), and there are a lot of Wright touches throughout.
Photos show the home has a statement concrete block fireplace in the living room surrounded by concrete accents on the walls, floor-to-ceiling windows and doors, horizontal lines, wooden built-ins and cabinets, overhanging eaves, and partial furnishing, due to many pieces of furniture being custom built for the place. In addition, there are also nods to Wright’s love of the outdoors, with a pristine landscaped outdoor area with terraces, a private garden, and a frog pond.
One of four Wright homes that were constructed in the neighborhood community The Acres, the Weisblat House has gotten a few upgrades since its 1951 build. In 1961, the Weisblat family added a gallery, a green house, a utility room, and an extra bathroom, according to Wallpaper Magazine. However, as with all historic homes, keep in mind that living in a Frank Lloyd Wright house does come with its own set of requirements.
While you likely won’t have to deal with painstakingly cleaning the stained glass windows that are typical of Prairie-style homes, The Acres community was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004, meaning that modifications are prohibited and the home should be maintained as is. With some furniture and features being built into the house, this might put a damper on your decorating freedom.
In addition, the land itself has a no-build clause, which might restrict how much you’re able to landscape the surrounding terraces.
However, if you appreciate the charm and aesthetic of a rare Frank Lloyd Wright home and can afford to make this pipe dream come true, this rural heritage home might be a great option to consider.
