On Sunday night, Hollywood’s golden couple Chris Pratt and Anna Faris announced they were splitting after eight years of being married. The shock revelation is nothing new in the age where one in five couples in the UK regularly consider separating . Relationship experts have agreed that a simple lack of respect is the ultimate reason behind why many couples divorce. But there are plenty more (and they don’t always involve constant arguing). “For some people, it is a slow recognition of a number of factors that begin to emerge in their relationship, while for others, there is a defining moment – when they realise that the relationship simply can’t last, often when you realise that you no longer love the person that they are with, or sadly, that they no longer love you,” says dating coach and behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings . “If you want to address the issues that are building up in your relationship, then the only way to truly understand whether you have a future together is to talk it through with your partner and tell them how you are feeling, however difficult it seems,” she adds. “Sometimes these feelings will be to do with something else altogether like illness or work stress, but if you don’t communicate, it will tend to get worse. If you are the one who is feeling like you don’t see a future, than it is kinder to be honest, rather than let your partner continue to suffer in fear and concern.” We got some more tips from some of the UK’s leading relationship and marriage experts to find out the major warning signs that could spell the end of your relationship. A photo posted by Hilary Duff (@hilaryduff) on Feb 9, 2016 at 8:17pm PST Last week, Hilary Duff and former NHLer Mike Comrie finalized their divorce – and a couple of days later, they packed their bags and jetted off to Hawaii along with their three-year-old son, Luca, and Comrie’s 18-year-old brother, Ty. Duff and Comrie have had a friendly relationship since they separated in 2014 – last month on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Duff gushed about how great her ex is. “We are good friends and we laugh a lot and we have a great communication.” Duff and Comrie aren’t the only celebrity couples jetting off post-divorce – everyone’s favourite “consciously uncoupled” pair Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin continue to frequently vacation with their two children. “We actually have a really strong friendship and we laugh and have fun,” Paltrow said last year. “And we’re lucky in that our parenting styles overlap a lot.” Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, Heather Locklear and Richie Sambora, and even Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen have also vacationed together after divorce – all with their kids in tow. While it’s may not be a surprise that some couples continue to head to the family cottage after separating, for many, it’s easier said than done.
The average couple spends about $30,000 to get hitched—quite frugal, actually, if you’re Kim Kardashian West. “Although this research might look like some excuse for gossip about hapless celebrities, it is much more serious than that,” says Marriage Foundation chairman Paul Coleridge. In what he dubs the “Hello! magazine weddings” — in reference to the lavish celebrity wedding spreads displayed by glossy magazines and equally lapped up by the general public — Coleridge suggests that even if celebrities do set the trend for spendthrift weddings, their marriages are relatively poor role models to mimic.
