Jimelle Levon is an 18-year-old designer from Columbus, Ohio. This year for prom, instead of coming up with some elaborate “promposal” to impress his date, he did the next best thing: he made her a dress.

“I have never taken any classes or been taught how to sew. I am a self taught artist,” Levon says on his website. “I feel as if since God blessed me with the talent I have at such a young age I should use it to help others.”

And this wasn’t just any dress he designed. Inspired by Shari Headley’s gold sequined gown in the 1988 film, “Coming to America,” the dress featured large gold leaf cutouts, which were sewn directly onto a sheer mesh yoke covering his date’s body

Levon then added a long strip of fabric to the base to create the skirt and train, topping the look off with a cone-like, gold hairpiece.

For his own outfit, he used the same gold leaves to embellish a blazer, which was worn over a ripped white t-shirt and cropped khakis topped with a baseball hat.
