Texas football coaches suspended after cringeworthy sexist presentation

For the past few years, American university Texas A&M has been trying to make football more accessible to girls.

On July 27, the school hosted it’s 2016 Chalk Talk, a special event with head football coach Kevin Sumlin, designed to help teach any unknowing females the ins and outs of the game.

“This is great opportunity whether you’re a casual observer of the game or you’re calling plays from the stands at Kyle Field,“ he explained. "There will be something for all knowledge levels.”

But it didn’t take long before the well-intentioned event took a turn for the worst.

The presentation, which was led by assistant coaches Jim Turner and Jeff Banks included a series of slides that many women in the audience weren’t happy about.

One of those women was Tonia Dousay, who posted the first slide on Facebook.

The slide reads: “We are Aggie women. We are filled with estrogen.” Not great, but not horrible. But then the real gender stereotyping begins.

“We are putting down our dish towels. And taking off our gloves. No more Lysol or Cascade. We want to score Touchdowns. And walk in the parade.”

Dousay was dumbfounded.

“It’s 2016. I just shared an awesome picture book this morning about women pioneers in science. We have the first female presidential nominee from a major political party (politics and my personal feelings about her aside). Not a week ago, Texas A&M University was named one of the top 50 universities for women. Yet, Texas A&M Athletics decides that this is cute and worthy of broadcasting at last night’s Chalk Talk,” she wrote.

“One step forward and two steps back. I’m so disappointed. I’m not sad. I’m angry.”

And the next slides were even worse.

Discussing the dos and don’ts of blocking, Turner and Banks made a number sexual references including, “get erect,” “bang him hard,” “spread your legs” and “no penetration.”

In response to the incident, Sumlin issued a statement claiming to be unaware of the presentation by the assistant coaches.

“On behalf of Aggie Football, I want to apologize for the comments at Chalk Talk and also for my failure to review their individual presentations.”

Turner and Banks also issued statements apologizing for the incident.

“We clearly understand now that our comments and slides were not appropriate or consistent with the values of our football program or our Department. We must do better, and we will.”

The statement also claims that as punishment, the two will be suspended without pay for two weeks as well as serve 20 hours of community service.
