The newest tattoo trend is temporary

Years ago, if you had a tattoo, it likely meant that you were a sailor or spent some time in a remote village in Japan or the Polynesian Islands. Today, it’s estimated that one in four Australians between the ages of 16 and 30 have one or more tattoos with similar statistics found in the U.S. and Canada. Despite the popularity, the concern over the permanence of tattoos still lingers.

Celebrities including Megan Fox, Britney Spears and Pharrell Williams have all publicly admitted to having various tattoos removed. Even Curtis Jackson –otherwise known as 50 Cent – reportedly removed the tattoos from his arms once his acting career picked up so that he wouldn’t have to spend so much time in the makeup chair getting them covered up.

Like anything permanent, tattoos carry a risk, which made the solution an obvious one to some retailers. Create temporary tattoos that look just as cool as the real thing.

In 2010, Chanel introduced “Les Trompe L'Oeil de Chanel,” a line of temporary tattoos featuring pearls and the double ‘C’ Chanel logo, during their Spring/Summer 2010 runway show.

The tattoos were so popular, Chanel decided put them up for purchase after the show for a cost of $75 for a sheet of 55 designs.

No stranger to the real thing, model Cara Delevingne also went temporary at the 2015 Met Gala with a canvas of painted birds and cherry blossoms by famed tattoo artist Bang Bang that added some edge to her Stella McCartney jumpsuit.

Beyonce is the latest celebrity to jump on the temporary tattoo train. Partnering with Flash Tattoos, her range of solid and metallic tattoos feature bees, antique guns and Beyonce-esque phrases including “flawless,” “crazy in love” and “I woke up like this.”

Though many tattoo enthusiasts are still opting for the real thing, the market for temporary continues to grow with popular brands like Tattly and Tattify appealing to everyone from kids to brides. At the very least, these wash away gems offer a fun way to try your wildest tattoo dream before going the ‘for life’ route. If only all major life decisions could have a temporary option.
