Three Bazaar editors are wearing this Aligne trench coat
A trench coat is a must-have for any woman's wardrobe, especially if you live in the temperamental UK climate where you'll be reaching for one summer through to winter. They come in all shapes and sizes, and there is no shortage of great styles out there, so, when three editors on the Harper's Bazaar team have all snapped up the exact same affordable trench coat, you know it's time to pay attention.
From Instagram favourite Aligne – which is no stranger to cult designs and wait lists – the Barnaby is a reversible coat with a checked heritage print on one side and waxed in the traditional trench hue on the other. Created in an oversized fit, the style also features corduroy cuffs and a collar, and round buttons up the front and on the back.
Here, see how the Bazaar team are styling theirs this autumn.

The one positive that comes from the temperatures dropping and the days getting shorter is being able to wear my autumn/winter wardrobe. My go-to outfit is denim jeans with a heeled boot and a cropped cashmere cardigan. But, of course, when it comes to the colder months, it’s all about the coat. In London your coat becomes your outfit from October to March, so it requires a lot of thought to choose a style that you’ll love wearing for months to come.
Even though I’m on the petite side at 5 ft 3, I like my outerwear to be long and have an oversized fit, but allow for layering underneath so it can easily take me from autumn to with an extra jumper or two. Colour is also key, and while black is a smart staple, I need something with a little more character so it keeps me interested through a long winter. That's why the Barnaby coat really stood out to me – slightly oversized with a heritage check and a brown cord collar and cuffs, it’s smart enough for the office while also being appropriate for your weekend plans. It’s the ideal length, sitting just below the knee so you can still show off the winter boots you invested in this season, plus its waist tie is there for the days you want a little more structure in your look.
The best thing about the Barnaby is that it’s reversible. On the other side of the heritage check is a waxed yellow-toned trench, with the same cord collar and cuffs. We all know a trench coat is a wardrobe staple. Over the last couple of weeks, as autumn has made an appearance, I’ve been wearing mine (both sides) with Agolde’s Criss-Cross jeans, a white t-shirt from Cos and Miu Miu’s patent leather kitten heels.

In the approach to the transitional period, I cannot stop wearing this Aligne reversible trench coat. I am teaming it with everything, whether for trips to the office or lazy weekend days, and I just know it's going to serve me into winter as well.
I love styling it with a colourful jumper, especially this design from MM6, to brighten up those rainy days, and I've been pairing it with these Goldsign leather trousers – which I live in – plus, some statement gold earrings. An easy-to-wear autumnal look that I can slip on in an instant.
And, with so little wardrobe space, the fact that this coat is reversible is a bonus because really is two for the price of one – and it means I won't get bored of it in a hurry. I'll be wearing it plain side out, dressed up with heels or boots, and dressed down for a country walk with the checked side showing.

I love a trench coat. I own more than a few, and I turn to them throughout the year, whatever the season – one of my favourites is a long, floaty style I bought from Le 17 Septembre a few seasons back, which I have pretty much worn out – so when I saw this new Aligne trench, and its boxy, oversized fit, I felt it offered a great point of difference to the others hanging in my wardrobe and knew I wanted to snap it up (along with half the office that is).
The style is actually much warmer than most other trenches I've tried, which means it will be great further into the winter months too, and the oversized fit leaves lots of room for layering chunky knitwear.
Right now, I am wearing it with silky dresses (getting the last wears out of my summer pieces before I pack them away into hibernation) and ballet flats, but I can easily see myself throwing it on over jeans and a white tee, or styled with chunky boots and a cosy knit co-ord come that colder weather.
