I Tried The McDonald's New Secret Menu Item & Here Are My Unfiltered Thoughts

If you've ever found yourself standing in front of the McDonald's menu signage torn over two items, we have good news: You no longer have to decide between the two. The golden arched fast food joint quietly dropped a secret menu item that combines two of our favorite orders: McNuggets and a McDouble.

Now, you're probably wondering, "Isn't that just two classic entrées? What makes it so special and secret?" The Crunchy Double, which originally launched on menus in Australia, is a McDouble piled with McNuggets (yep, right on the sandwich) and drizzled with the chain's tangy BBQ sauce.

Being that I'm A.) a dedicated journalist and B.) a McDonald's expert, I knew what I had to do—and that, my friends, is try the Crunchy McDouble for myself. While it hasn't quite made it to U.S. stores in an official capacity, creating the customization is easy enough whether you're ordering IRL or through the mobile app. There's just a little assembly involved.

I placed an order for the McDouble, four McNuggets, and added a side of BBQ sauce. The order was still under $10 even with a necessary large Diet Coke to wash it all down. After picking up my order and arriving home, it was time to bring the creation to life. I stacked three of the four McNuggets on top of the McDouble (the fourth nugget didn't fit, so I had a nice appetizer), drizzled the BBQ sauce, and sandwiched it all back together between buns. Then it was time for the first bite.

I was nervous! Overwhelmed! The entire concept of a nugget stacked burger felt...dare I say it...crazy? I was worried that one would overpower the other or just not combine well together at all.

I need not have worried. There was something so satisfying about the crunch of the crispy McNugget breading meeting with the juicy beef patties and melty cheese. It's truly the best of both worlds. The flavor wasn't overwhelming nor did one ingredient overpower the other. It simply satiated two cravings at once — each bite had an excellent balance of flavor and texture. Plus, if you're trying to hit your daily protein goal, that's 32 grams of it right there.

With that being said, it's definitely a heftier order than your average McDonald's entrée. I'd typically go for a classic cheeseburger, and though I enjoyed this iteration, the Crunchy Double might be a little too much as an every visit type of meal, Sometimes, you still just want a cheeseburger or nuggets separately.

Technically, the sammie is being touted as an in-app only order, but you can just do what I did, and order the McDouble, McChicken, and BBQ sauce separately. Toss it all together and bam, it's done — and you can call yourself the chef.
