I Tried the New Starbucks ‘Wicked’ Drinks, and They’re Pure Magic
There are few things that high school-aged me and grown-up me have in common, but knowing every single word of the soundtrack to the musical, Wicked, and a slight obsession with Starbucks are definitely two of them. So, when I heard that Starbucks had created Wicked-inspired drinks leading up to the release of the film adaptation of Wicked, I knew I had to try them. Would they defy gravity? I absolutely had to find out.
I grabbed my car keys, my broom (kidding!), and my credit card and headed to Starbucks to order one each of Glinda’s Pink Potion and Elphaba’s Cold Brew. Glinda’s Pink Potion is essentially a classic Mango Dragon Fruit Refresher with a creamy, non-dairy strawberry cold foam and a dusting of sparkling candy sprinkles on top. The first thing I noticed about the drink is that it’s really pretty, and the sprinkles combined with the freeze-fried dragon fruit made it really look like a potion straight out of Oz. I love that it’s a caffeine-free option, because sometimes I want a treat later in the day that won’t keep me up all night.
And it tastes just as good as it looks. The strawberry cold foam is the best part of the drink, adding sweetness without making it too sweet. It definitely feels more like a dessert or a snack, but maybe that’s because I typically only order black coffee or a latte when I visit Starbucks. Either way, I would definitely order it again when I want to enjoy something fun, sparkly, and special.
Then I tried Elphaba’s Cold Brew, which is flavored with peppermint syrup and has a creamy, non-dairy matcha cold foam and green candy sprinkles on top. Starbucks typically puts four pumps of flavored syrup in a grande, but this drink only has two, so the peppermint flavor is present but not overwhelming.
I’m not typically a peppermint fan, but this drink has just the right amount. What really sets it apart from tasting like a standard cold brew with peppermint syrup is the matcha cold foam, which gives it not only Elphaba’s signature green coloring, but also a truly unique flavor combination. The slight touch of sweetness from the matcha creates an elevated flavor profile that’s more complex than peppermint alone.
Overall, these drinks are great, and it’s the special cold foam flavors and candy sprinkles that distinguish these drinks from the rest of the menu. While they aren’t menu items I would usually order, they were absolutely delicious. I will definitely order them again before they disappear from the menu. They’re so good that I’ll be surprised if these limited-time-only drinks aren’t among Starbucks most popular.
