Turns out we’ve been pronouncing the name of this brand all wrong

Walk into any mall or major high street and you’re sure to see a Zara store. But what the heck do you call it?

The Spanish clothing and accessories brand has been around for more than 40 years, with more than 2,000 stores worldwide. Which makes it even more perplexing that we haven’t figured out how to say the name properly.

While most of us would pronounce the four letter name, zahr-rah, the correct pronunciation requires you to put on a Northern Castilian accent so it’s more like tsah-dah. Not what you expected, right?

The discovery came after a Refinery29 editor visited a store in northern Spain and asked one of the employees to pronounce the name, which she then captured on Instagram.

While some may argue that it’s just a matter of accent, the fact that this is how they say the name in the place where the company was founded should hold some value.
