With minus temperatures and snow setting in across the UK this week, households are doing everything they can to keep their homes as warm as possible.

From draught excluders and portable electric heaters to hot water bottles and central heating timers, we’re turning to all kinds of things as the winter chill takes hold – but are also conscious of the rising cost of energy bills.

January 2025 marks the start of the energy price cap rise, which sees the annual bill for a dual-fuel direct debit household (using a typical amount of energy) go up to £1,738 per year – an increase of £21 from the previous cap.

It’s therefore important to make sure every penny of energy counts and one heating expert has shared an unexpected summer cooling appliance that could help do so.

Llewellyn Kinch, an energy expert and CEO at MakeMyHouseGreen, explains that a ceiling fan could be an unlikely winter saviour for households.

While these fans don’t control temperature, they do help move air around. They also spin in both directions, which can impact how the fan circulates cold and hot air.

Llewellyn told Manchester Evening News: “During the winter, set the fan to rotate clockwise at a low speed. This creates a gentle updraft, drawing cooler air from below upward, and pushing the warm air that has risen to the ceiling gently down into the room.

"This makes sure none of that warmth is wasted.”

While it might sound counterintuitive, using these ceiling fans during winter could save households as much as 15% on heating bills, according to Save on Energy – as they can help distribute and maintain any heat pumped out.

This means you can also adjust your thermostat to a lower setting, but still keep warm and save on your heating costs.
