The university essentials freshers actually need, recommended by graduates
Eight graduates weigh in on what they wish they’d had in their dorm, from a mattress protector to a practical wash bag.
Starting university is a hugely exciting time for a young person, with new friends, new experiences and fresher’s week to look forward to. But before the fun (and serious study, of course) can begin, students must get clued up on what to take with them as they move away from home - many for the very first time.

Student halls and houses are not known for offering anything more than a bed and a closet, so everything else is up to you and your child. Using checklists from helpful sites such as Save The Student can help you make sure they have key items, like bedding, kitchen utensils, bathroom supplies, stationery, clothes, and important documents.
But there are some items that may not be on every checklist, but would come in extremely handy for students as they navigate life on their own. According to the Guardian, items like air fryers and steamers have joined the list of university essentials, as well as anti-allergy pillows, duvets and protectors.
Reflecting on our own university days, the Yahoo Life team has selected the one item that came in extremely handy as a fresher, as well as an item we wished we had to make university living just a little bit easier.

✅ The item I was thankful for: Brita water jug and filters
"I didn't realise how hard the water in university halls would be and how gross it would make all the kettles! This Brita water filter jug changed my tea game forever."
🛍️ The item I wish I had: Handheld vacuum cleaner
"This would have been perfect for cleaning my tiny room in uni halls. It's also super compact, so it would take up barely any storage - a really useful feature considering how I could barely store anything else in my room!"
Sabrina Carder, Commerce Editor
✅ The item I was thankful for: Celebration chocolates
"I was a shy kid, so my mum left me with a box of chocolates to help me integrate with my flatmates. During that awkward first Freshers Week, it genuinely helped break the ice and made my room very popular."
🛍️ The item I wish I had: Easy to carry laundry basket
"I wish I had a easy to carry laundry bag - there was nothing worse than lugging my wash basket across campus to the laundry room and back again."
Marianna Gould, Deputy Commerce Editor
✅ The item I was thankful for: Meat thermometer
"I did a lot of cooking as a student, and this was really useful for making sure any meat was cooked through completely and avoiding dreaded food poisoning."
🛍️ The item I wish I had: Trolley for groceries
"A shopping trolley like this one would've been such a huge help with the big grocery shop when I was at uni, especially with all the hills I had to climb!"
Rebecca Nicholson, Head of Lifestyle
✅ The item I was thankful for: Mattress protector
"My uni essential was honestly a thick mattress protector, as so many people have used the same mattress before you!"
🛍️ The item I wish I had: A pod coffee machine
"This would have made getting up for early morning classes a little bit more luxe, compared to my Asda own brand instant coffee."
Emma Elms, Real Life Editor
✅ The item I was thankful for: Toastie maker
"A toastie maker was incredibly useful, especially living in halls with filthy communal kitchens and dreadful canteen meals."
🛍️ The item I wish I had: A mini fridge
"I think a mini private fridge for my own room would have been great. The kitchen was horrible with dirty plates and mouldy food festering everywhere!"
Hannah Millington, Health Reporter
✅ The item I was thankful for: Wall calendar
"A really simple but useful item I brought was a wall calendar. It helped me stay organised with my classes and made it easy to schedule events."
🛍️ The item I wish I had: Multiple bed sheet sets
“I wish I had brought more bed sheet sets with me. I didn’t realise there would be so much waiting between washing my sheets and drying them.”
Marie-Claire Dorking, Freelance Contributor
✅ The item I was thankful for: Shower slippers
"The communal showers aren't always the most pristine (shall we say) and wearing flip flops while in the shower meant my feet weren't at risk of touching other people's hair and/or verrucas."
🛍️ The item I wish I had: A flask
Now, I can't go anywhere without my YETI vacuum flask that keeps tea warm and wine cold - and it really works. It would have really helped at uni keeping the coffee/tea hot all day while I worked on essays in the library or at my desk."
