Watch: How to make the best homemade guacamole recipe

Guacamole is a must-have for many tables on Taco Tuesday, during outings to a Mexican restaurant, at tailgates or on an everyday afternoon.

Whether it's store-bought or homemade, leftover guacamole turns brown easily. While it's still delicious and safe to eat with some brown on it, one way to avoid discoloration is by making the dip with one avocado at a time and in smaller portion sizes. You can also save a few bucks by buying the smaller avocados at the grocery store.

Of course, guacamole demands some chips to dip. And for a tastier and more budget-friendly option, consider buying (or making) fresh tortilla chips.

How to make guacamole

Making guacamole at home is super easy.

Start by making a homemade pico de gallo. To do this, mix chopped tomato, onion, jalapeños, and cilantro.

In a separate bowl, mash the avocado with a fork.

Once the avocado is mashed, spoon in pico de gallo to taste. Then, add salt and lime juice and mix. That's it!

The remaining pico de gallo can be stored in the fridge for a few days. It'll be ready to use in another batch of guacamole or enjoyed with tacos.

Easy tips for making guacamole

Specialty tools are great, but sometimes they're costly and take up precious real estate in your kitchen drawers. Consider using some of these kitchen items you probably already have to make your guacamole-making even easier.

  • Use a wire rack to press avocados. Place a halved avocado with the pit removed face down on the rack. Press it through the rack, gently sliding it to get all the avocado. Make sure there’s something underneath the rack to catch it!

  • Use tongs to juice citrus. Place the citrus near the middle of the tongs for extra leverage and give it a firm squeeze. When squeezing a lemon, turn it right-side up to prevent the seeds from going into your dish.

  • Use a pizza wheel to quickly chop herbs.

  • Use a potato masher to mash avocados. This is useful for larger servings that might be a monumental task for a fork.
