Queen Elizabeth is best known as the monarch of the United Kingdom, but a new documentary titled Queen of the World explores her role as the head of the Commonwealth, an association of 53 independent countries that once belonged to the British Empire.

The trailer for the film (above) highlights the documentary's focus: the Queen's work with the Commonwealth over the course of her reign, and how she plans to "hand the baton" so to speak, to the younger generation of royals.

"The Queen is a unique figure on the world stage, with a huge depth of experience having met more global leaders than any previous British monarch and serving longer than all of them," ITV's Jo Clinton-Davis said of the project, according to Harper's Bazaar UK.

"This film is a rare opportunity to see Her Majesty up close and behind the scenes in this role, which means so much to her and has been so significant for Britain and the Commonwealth."

The film features archival footage of the royal family, and conversations with Prince Charles and Princess Anne about their mother. Princes William and Harry also feature in the film, as does the Duchess of Sussex in her first television interview since joining the royal family. In a poignant scene, she views her bridal veil, which featured a tribute to the Commonwealth, for the first time since her wedding. The 16-foot silk tulle design included a hand-embroidered flower for each nation in the organization (plus a California poppy for Meghan's home state, and Wintersweet, which grows outside her new home in Kensington Palace).

"Fifty-three countries, oh my goodness! It will keep us busy," Meghan says in the trailer, referring to Prince Harry's new job as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador.

If you're in the United Kingdom, Queen of the World will air on ITV on September 25 at 9:15 p.m. It will premiere in the States October 1 at 8 p.m. on HBO and HBO Go.
