Watch strangers flood 103-year-old woman with cards and gifts on her birthday

If you think mailing birthday cards is out of style in our digital world, think again!

When Mabel White was about to turn 103 years old, carers at Watford House Care Home in New Mills, England, worried she’d get very few birthday cards.

Mabel’s husband had died five years previously, they had no children, and Mabel had outlived all her family and friends. So her carers launched a social media appeal asking strangers to send cat-loving Mabel a birthday card.

The response was overwhelming! Mabel was deluged with around 1700 cards and gifts, some sent from as far away as India, Iceland, France, and Canada.

“The response has been absolutely incredible,” said the care home’s activities manager, Matthew Cox. “People have really gone out of their way to make a difference and it’s been really touching. We have had cards from all over the globe that are all associated with cats, which is fantastic. People have been even coming into the home to have their picture with her — she’s become a real little celebrity.”
