These Levi’s jeans want to give you a wedgie. Really.

I have always had a strong affinity for high-waisted pants. A large part of my university years were spent in belly button-concealing denim from American Apparel in a multitude of colours (including a pair of shorts that my friends dubbed the Diaper Shorts). While I’ve toned that down a bit, I still gravitate towards denim with a fairly high rise. Maybe I’m shell shocked from the Britney Spears-esque low rise jeans that plagued my high school in the early 2000s.

That being said, I’ve never really understood the 'mom jeans’ trend. I find the ‘90s style to be universally unflattering (sorry, mom jean lovers), not to mention uncomfortable. But, I still know the mom jean is making a huge comeback.

That’s why my interest was piqued when I heard about Levi’s new jeans: the Wedgie.

According to a press release, the vintage-inspired denim was created to “solve for that all-too familiar awkward bulge that can occur when ladies try on their vintage jeans.”

“By tweaking the fit to create, well, a wedgie, that problem is solved.”

The Wedgie jeans come complete with a button fly and back pockets that are “slightly tilted inwards adding the allure of the ultimate ‘mom butt.’”

They looked pretty good on the Levi’s models – but how do these jeans look on an average human being? I decided to sacrifice myself in the name of fashion.

I switched out my go-to midrise Gap jeans for the Levi’s and prepared for my closeup. The first thing I noticed was that the jeans, in fact, do give you a wedgie. Not full on a-bully-pulled-underwear-over-your-head type thing, but it’s definitely there. The second thing I noticed was that, wedgie aside, these jeans are quite comfortable – both in the waist and throughout the legs, which I’ve found to be a problem with other high-wasited denim.

The “cropped, slightly tapered leg” isn’t what I usually would go for (denim trend after denim trend, I stay true to my skinny jeans), but I have to say, I did enjoy the relaxed fit for a change.

Will I become a mom jeans convert? Probably not. But for anyone looking for a pair of vintage-inspired jeans that won’t make you feel like you actually went shopping in your mom’s closet, these are a pretty darn good option.

The Levi’s Wedgie fit comes in a number of washes and will hit Canadian stores in February, with prices ranging from $98 to $118.
