Here’s where to celebrate Juneteenth around South Florida

It’s almost time for the celebrations and sounds of Juneteenth, a national holiday commemorating when the last of slaves were set free in Galveston, Texas. Over the years, the nation has embraced the holiday as the freedom holiday, including cities around Miami.

Here are a few events to add to your calendar as you make plans to celebrate.

Juneteenth Comedy Show

Villain Theater will host their second annual comedy show produced by Victoria Haig and directed by Noel Harris on Friday, June 14, at 10 p.m. Guests can expect dance numbers, comedy skits from Felisha Noel, Emmanuel Cureton, Dominique Colas, Richard Lewis and more. Tickets are $20.

Homestead Emancipation Exposition

The City of Homestead will celebrate their first annual exposition on June 15 at the City Hall Plaza, located at 100 Civic Court, Homestead. The event will feature an exhibit showcasing the milestones of Black figures, poetry readings, music and performances. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is free for all but RSVP is encouraged.

Juneteenth at FIU

For its fourth year, Florida International University will observe Juneteenth with a series of events under the theme “Educate. Celebrate. Heal.” Activities include the Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration on June 15, 1 to 5 p.m. and Official Juneteenth Ceremony on June 19, 9 to 11 a.m.

The Juneteenth Experience by Hued Songs

From June 14-19, the performance collective Hued Songs presents their annual celebration of Black liberation through art. Expect a show that features music, poetry, dance, and visual media. The performance blends gospel, contemporary, and classical music. The Juneteenth Experience 2024 is a series of three events that will take place in two different venues: the Colony Theatre in Miami Beach and the historic Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale.

Artwalk in Richmond Heights

Richmond Heights hosts its Juneteenth Celebration Artwalk on June 14 start 5 p.m across from the Purple Church, 14700 Lincoln Blvd. in Miami. Guest can enjoy art, food trucks and music. Admission is free.

The Miami Gardens Celebration

For it’s fourth year, the City of Miami Gardens is hosting their “Park-in and Party” celebration on June 15 at the Hard Rock Stadium. Singer Stephanie Mills is this year’s headliner with other local acts like Melton Mustafa, May Reign, Kent Jones and others. Gates open at 3 p.m. and the show starts at 5 p.m. Tickets are $20 per car; VIP Black Experience tickets are $40 per person.

Miami New Drama

The Miami Drama will present short films, soulful music led by Hued Songs’ executive artistic director Kunya Rowley. The two-day event will take place on June 18-19 at 7 p.m., at The Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Rd. in Miami Beach. Tickets start at $31.50

North Miami Juneteenth Celebration

On June 18, enjoy live bands, art, games and vendors highlighting Black culture. The event will be held at the Griffing Center in North Miami. This event is free and will have something for all ages including a Family Fun Zone with face paint and interactive shops. The celebration runs from 6-10 p.m.

Rebellion and Resistance by Miami Beach

The Peter London Global Dance Company will put on a free performance in celebration of the holiday on June 19 at the Lincoln Road mall from 6-7 p.m.
