Why you need to clean your bird box in February
Homeowners are being urged to prepare their bird boxes to support local wildlife during February and the start of nesting season.
With birds beginning their search for safe nesting spots, now is the perfect time to clean and position your nest boxes for any birds visiting your garden.
Experts at Gardeners’ World stress that timely preparation is key to ensuring birds have a clean, safe place to raise their young.
Their top advice? Give bird boxes a thorough clean before mid-February to remove old nesting materials, parasites, and debris. This simple step can help create a healthier environment for new inhabitants.
"Prospecting birds usually start looking for places to raise their young in mid-February,” they said.
For those installing new boxes, placement is essential. Experts recommend positioning them away from direct sunlight and harsh weather conditions, ideally facing northeast. It’s also never too late to put up a new box, as birds will continue scouting for suitable sites well into spring.
February is also a great time to give other wildlife in your garden a helping hand. For example, leaving food out for hedgehogs — especially hedgehog-friendly meals — can help them survive cold spells.
Additionally, planting wildlife-friendly hedges offers shelter and food for birds and insects, while early-blooming flowers like crocuses and primroses nourish pollinators emerging from hibernation.
Gardeners are also advised to avoid disturbing compost heaps, as these can be vital hibernation spots for creatures like frogs, newts, and slowworms. Gardeners’ World explains that while most wildlife remains dormant in February, early bumblebees or hedgehogs may emerge during mild weather and be hungry after months without food.
They suggest creating varied habitats such as ponds, bee-friendly plant beds or log piles to attract more wildlife. Installing a wildlife camera can also provide fascinating insights into the creatures that visit your garden.
They advise: "The best way to attract more wildlife to your garden is to create habitats where wildlife can feed, sleep and hibernate, such as digging a pond, growing plants for bees or making a log pile.
