Why is Harry Styles so Good at Wearing Necklaces?

A recent photo of Harry Styles made me want to scream. And not just any plain scream. The kind of tribal scream you figuratively let out when you’re begging your favorite celebrity to run you over with a truck on Twitter. In this photo he was wearing a lime green Marc Jacobs Intarsia Sweater that said “Stay Away From Toxic People” (agree!), styled with my personal favorite accessory: a single lil’ string of pearls, wrapped around his beautiful lil’ neck.

In the past couple weeks, Styles has made me want to clutch my pearls repeatedly by wearing his pearls continuously. He’s styled the classic accessory most often associated with royalty and southern sorority girls impeccably, with everything from a shirt with his own name on it to a crewneck sweater featuring a chipper little lamb. I think I speak for the rest of the internet when I say I hope the next pearl-necklace look involves Styles being shirtless — because I want to get a better look at the pearl necklace, of course.

But what I love most about this look isn’t just the fact that Styles looks so good, or that guys don’t wear enough pearls but clearly should. It’s that his pearl necklace represents so much of what’s been exciting to see in fashion recently. Styles has actual personal style. He always looks like he’s wearing the clothing, not like the clothing is wearing him. He demonstrates that there isn’t a right or a wrong way to wear pearls, but simply that you can wear them, no matter who you are or what you’re wearing or whether you’d like to stay away from Toxic People or not.

Most people would immediately note his wearing of pearls is gender fluid and that’s true too. But I’d argue what’s more astonishing is how casually every pearl necklace look is. Styles has taken an accessory associated with the richest of the rich and made it cool. Casual! Chill. I’ve always loved pearl necklaces but have struggled with how to wear them so as to not look like I’ve murdered my rich husband for his Hamptons estate. Styles’s answer is to just act like you’re not wearing them at all. Throw them on with anything. Dress for yourself and make it punk. And by all means, go ahead and clutch your pearls.
