Why you should visit one of the prettiest villages in Sussex
Nestled at the foot of the South Downs, the pretty village of Alfriston in East Sussex boasts chocolate-box-pretty pubs, medieval buildings, charming independent shops, the first-ever National Trust property, and glorious countryside views.
Alfriston was a popular stopping-off spot for pilgrims, who would head to The Star Hotel for shelter. It was originally built by the Abbot of Battle sometime in the 16th century, but later became an inn.
The village was founded in the Saxon period and was awarded market status in the Middle Ages. Today, Alfriston is popular with countryside lovers and holidaymakers passing through East Sussex.
It can get busy during the summer months, so try and visit on a weekday if you can.

Wander through the countryside
Alfriston sits within the South Downs National Park, making it ideal for a countryside ramble. Head left from the church and you'll find a small stream.
You can either continue along here until you reach the fields, or walk in the footsteps of the artists and writers of the Bloomsbury Group as you follow the National Trust's circular route. It takes around three hours and begins in Willows car park (grid ref: TQ522032).
Dine at the George Inn
The George Inn is one of the oldest inns in the area, first licensed in 1397.
Nestled in the middle of picturesque Alfriston, the family-run business offers timber beams, hearty meals, a roaring log fire, and a large walled beer garden to enjoy on those sunny Sussex days. The whole menu is worth trying, but we especially loved the pan-fried seabass fillet.
Explore the beautiful church
St Andrew's Church in Alfriston is a Grade I-listed building that was built in the 1370s.
Known as the 'Cathedral of the Downs', it's a calming and peaceful place to find refuge. It stands on high ground beside the thatched 14th-century parsonage, and is surrounded by luscious lawns — the perfect place for a picnic.
Visit the local shops
The welcoming village is peppered with charming stores, from ice cream shops to village stores. We popped into Fern, a charming rustic store that sells homewares, textiles, candles, and gift cards.
Meanwhile, Emmett & White Antiques & Interiors is also worth poking your head in for pre-loved goods in need of a new home.
Walk around the beautiful cottages
If you, like us, love a country cottage, you will love the houses in Alfriston. Covered in Wisteria, bedecked in thatch, and complete with glorious gardens (there's not a weed in sight), they certainly make for property dreaming. We spotted this gorgeous white cottage along a walk towards the river.
Visit the Clergy House
Set back from the main thoroughfare, the Alfriston Clergy House is the first-ever building to be saved by the National Trust in 1896 for just £10.
The beautiful thatched house is over 600 years old and is among a handful of remaining Wealden Houses in the village. Available to visit through the National Trust, it has become one of the most picturesque houses in the area, with views across the River Cuckmere.
Visit the smallest purpose-built bank in England
The Old Bank, built in 1901 for Molyneux Whitfield and Co of the Old Bank, Lewes, was the smallest purpose-built bank building in England. It closed in April 1992 and now functions as a small village shop.
Stop off for afternoon tea
A trip to the countryside isn't complete without a scrumptious afternoon tea. Badgers Tea House, situated on North Street, is the best place in the village for a cuppa.
Whether you sit in the walled garden or hunker down in the indoor tea room, there is something for everyone. Don't leave without trying a homemade scone with lashings of cream and jam.
Explore Cradle Valley in East Sussex
Hike over spectacular hilltops, journey through country lanes and explore the very best of Sussex on the National Trust Frog Firle Farm hill and vale walk.
Looping over Cradle and Hindover Hills, this scenic walk takes around two hours to complete and offers brilliant farmland views. Highlights include wildflowers growing in the chalk grassland and Canada geese feeding on the water meadows.
