Will Smith sings, but 'A Whole New World' wins the new 'Aladdin' trailer

It’s safe to say that the dubious public reaction to the first Aladdin trailer isn’t exactly what Disney wished for. So the Mouse House went back to the drawing board for a second sneak peek at Guy Ritchie’s live action remake of its 1992 hit, and it doubles down on the element that unnerved viewers the first time: Will Smith‘s buff blue genie.

Not only does the former Fresh Prince get more screen time in this two-and-a-half minute spot, he also shows off his song-and-dance moves in a snippet of the Genie’s signature number, “Friend Like Me,” previously performed onscreen by the dearly departed Robin Williams. Oh yeah, and the trailer (as well as a new poster) also reassures moviegoers that Smith won’t be all blue, all the time, which means you can hold off on any more of those Arrested Development memes.

So far, Smith’s second introduction seems to be going over better on Twitter, where nostalgia for Aladdin‘s infectious music is helping to offset his jarring appearance.

Of course, there are still plenty of Smith skeptics out there.

One thing that everyone does seem to agree on is how smart it was for Disney to end the trailer with Aladdin and Jasmin’s magic carpet ride, scored to Alan Menken and Tim Rice’s Oscar-winning favorite “A Whole New World.” Hearing stars Naomi Scott and Mena Massoud croon that song transported many folks back to their childhood … and will almost certainly make it a karaoke staple all over again.

With public opinion seemingly turning in Aladdin’s favor, Disney shouldn’t have to feel blue about the movie’s prospects anymore.

Aladdin apparates into theaters on May 24.
