The journey to conceive hasn’t been easy for Jessica Mahoney and her husband Kevin. After having their first son Corbin, the couple experienced six miscarriages trying to conceive their second child. But now, Jessica is pregnant again. And hoping to make the experience extra special, Kevin arranged for photographer JoAnn Marrero to create a special “rainbow” shoot for Jessica.

“Six babies lost to have the honour to carry this rainbow baby,” Jessica said of the photo, which has since gone viral. “I hope my story helps someone else to know they are not alone, as the journey of loss and infertility is dark and lonely.”

“It was an incredible and collaborative effort to get this shot,” Marrero says in a Facebook post.

“A rainbow baby is the understanding that the beauty of a rainbow does not negate the ravage of the storm. When a rainbow appears, it does not mean the storm never happened or the family is still not dealing with its aftermath. What it means is that something beautiful and full of light has appeared in the midst of the darkness and clouds.”

To create Jessica’s rainbow, Marrero and her assistant Mary Maloney used a series of coloured smoke bombs, set off one by one to create a rainbow effect behind Jessica.

“We def used real smoke bombs and double sided grenade ones too!” said Marrero. “Some failed ones and trial and error, smoke everywhere! Poor Mary got smoked out setting off those bad boys with incredibly dense smoke!”

But in the end it was totally worth it to get the shot.

“I am excited and honored to share this beautiful moment and can not wait for this baby to born,” said Marrero.
