A pregnant woman has been left having to choose between her partner and her mom due to ongoing tension between them.

She shared her mother’s hatred for her partner in a post on the UK parenting forum Mumsnet, writing under the username BeRubySquid. She argued her mom has “no reason” for the strong feelings but has left him on the verge of tears with her constant criticism.

The woman — who was hospitalized at 36 weeks pregnant — said her partner has “a lot of pressure” on him to prepare their home for their baby while working full time, caring for their 8-year-old child and ensuring she has everything necessary while in the hospital.

“When my mum found out I’d been admitted she offered to help my partner pack up the house, which we gratefully accepted,” the woman wrote. “She turned up yesterday and instantly started judging our situation.”

“She started having a go at him basically saying he wasn’t good enough for me and all of this was so unorganized and last minute and all of it was his fault,” the woman continued. “She also kept referring to me as ‘my daughter’ the conversation ended with her telling him he isn’t good enough for me and I deserve better,” she added. “Now this is a man at breaking point.”

The Mumsnet user described her mom as a “snob” who is “extremely judgemental” about appearances. Her mother called her partner “controlling” for offering to cover the cost of their expenses if she didn’t want to go back to work after the birth of their child and previously said he was "showing off" by paying for a family meal.

Having phoned her mom to discuss how she left her partner fighting back tears, the woman revealed her mom tried to get her to end the relationship. “She then asked me if I’m truly happy with him to which I obviously replied yes and she just huffed at me down the phone,” the Mumsnet user shared, adding that “the conversation ended with her saying she would walk away from my life and leave me to it, wished me luck with everything and then went.”

“She’s made digs at me about him in the past and I honestly don’t understand why,” she continued. “He’s literally never done anything to her and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been with him.”

The woman admitted she’s kept her mom at “arm's length” throughout adulthood as she treated her poorly in the past. However, she feels bad because her mom lives alone and she wouldn’t be able to “forgive” herself if they ceased contact then something happened to her mom.

“I’m a level headed person and generally try and see both sides of a situation but with this I feel she is completely the one in the wrong,” the woman shared, before ending with: “Any advice is much appreciated.”

One commenter described the mom as “cruel” for creating drama while her daughter was in hospital, while another accused the mom of being “jealous” of the relationship. “Did she do this in front of your 8-year-old?” a commenter asked. “Either way, your partner doesn't deserve to be treated like this and shouldn't ever have to see your mother again.

“Your children shouldn't be around someone who treats their parent like that,” they added. “If you choose to keep a relationship with her it should be just you and never at your home. The way she spoke to your partner is vile.”

While a flood of responses to the post advised the woman not to speak to her mom until she apologized to her partner, one commenter defended the mom by trying to give an explanation for her critical behavior. “Maybe she is worried that you are not married and thinks that suggests he doesn’t value you enough,” they said.
