‘Yellowstone’ Fans React to Finding Out Why Beth Really Hates Jamie During Sunday's Episode

From Good Housekeeping

  • Season 3 of Yellowstone continued with "Cowboys and Dreamers," which aired on Sunday, July 19.

  • During a flashback scene, fans found out why Beth hates Jamie so much.

  • The Dutton sibling's relationship has been in question since the start of the show — and it looks like things are just heating up.

Beth and Jamie Dutton have one of the most complicated sibling rivalries on television — and up until now, Yellowstone viewers haven't been able to make sense of it all.

During Sunday's episode, fans finally got the answers they've been searching for after three seasons of deep-seated hatred. In "Cowboys and Dreamers," it was revealed that a young Beth Dutton turned to Jamie for help when she discovered that she was pregnant. Because Beth wanted to abort the baby, she had two choices: She could go to the nearest Planned Parenthood and risk her family's name, or head to the free clinic at the Indian reservation and play by their rules. Jamie advised that she should choose the latter, which introduced a major complication because all abortions performed at the Indian reservation require sterilization. (In real life, The Indian Health Service sterilized as many as 70,000 Native women during the 1970s, often without their consent or knowledge, according to Vice.)

While this troubling in itself, the bigger issue is that Jamie agreed to sterilization without talking to his sister. In the episode, it's assumed that she went forward with the procedure without knowing the long-term ramifications. This explains why the discussion of children has always been a pain point for Beth, including during last week's episode when she told Rip that she couldn't have children.

Fans have been theorizing why Beth hates Jamie since last season when the two got into a physical fight at their father's ranch. Some thought that it all stems from their mother's untimely death, others assumed that Jamie isn't really a Dutton, and a few suspected that Jamie somehow interfered with Beth's ability to have children. While no one got the details completely right, some fans pointed out that their original guesses weren't too far off.

Others — okay, basically everyone else — were completely shocked with the reveal.

As expected, fans rallied around Beth. Some even shed a few tears thinking about the pain she's endured.

While most fans are on Beth's side, some feel sorry for Jamie, especially since one wrong decision changed his relationship with his sister forever.

A few fans even questioned where John Dutton was during this time when his daughter needed him most.

Wes Bentley, the actor who plays Jamie, was right when he told Good Housekeeping that "the answers eventually lead to even more questions." As soon as the fans found out the origins of Beth's hatred, they started to wonder if the baby was Rip's (all signs point yes) and if she'd ever tell him the truth about her infertility. In many ways, this revelation explains why Beth is the way the she is with Rip, Jamie, and well, everyone else that comes in her path.

Ahead of the season 3 premiere, Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth, spoke to Good Housekeeping about her character's complex relationship with Jamie: "This isn't just a sibling rivalry. This isn't just a chip on the shoulder. This is at the core of a trauma in their lives — something happened that changed this relationship, that could've potentially been a beautiful one."

At the time, the actress expressed concern that fans would turn on Beth once they found out why she treats Jamie with such hostility: "I hope it won't make people hate her. Hopefully, they'll start to understand why she could do that to somebody." But based on the Twitter reactions alone, it looks like Jamie's the one who has to win back everybody's love (if that's even possible at this point).
