A New 'Yellowstone' Spin-Off Series Is Coming Later This Year

  • Yellowstone, which is set to air its fourth season this summer, still holds the top spot as cable's #1 drama.

  • During the Super Bowl, Paramount+ aired a commercial, announcing that the streaming service would air an origin story prequel, Y: 1883.

  • The series is set to debut on Paramount+ in 2021.

We're about to get to know the Duttons on a whole new level.

During Sunday's Super Bowl LV, fans got a sneak peek of an all-new Yellowstone spin-off, set to arrive on Paramount+ later this year. The 10-second teaser for Y: 1883 didn't show any faces or names, but still found a way to captivate fans. As snow whips through the mountains, a mysterious voice says, "I don't care if you live or die, but should you live, you tell 'em about me."

The new series will take fans back more than 130 years as the Dutton family embarks "on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America." With Yellowstone mastermind Taylor Sheridan at the helm, the show promises to tell the origin story of the family that has dominated cable for the last three summers: "It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land — Montana," Paramount+ wrote in a statement.

In many ways, Yellowstone's latest season may have been setting the stage for the spinoff series. Since the very start of the show, the Duttons have been fighting to keep their land, but it really came to a head in the final few episodes of season 3. Willa Hayes and Roarke Morris gave the Duttons an ultimatum: sell the land for $500 million or give it up in a few years' time, leaving them nothing in return. Although his children tried to convince him otherwise, John Dutton refused to sell the ranch — and perhaps Y:1883 will give fans more insight about why this land means so much to him.

Yellowstone has loyal (not to mention, vocal) fans, so it comes as no surprise that many took to social media to share their excitement about the new series, which is set to launch in late 2021. "Anyone else hyperventilating when they saw the commercial? Still screaming. 💀," one excited fan wrote. "The most exciting thing to come from this Super Bowl," wrote another.

A few actors from the Yellowstone cast chimed in with supportive messages: "Incredible. Cannot wait," wrote Jefferson White, the actor who plays Jimmy on the show. Wendy Moniz, who plays Governor Perry, kept it short and sweet with "Yessssss!!!!"

Some fans cut to the chase, asking why they are spilling details about a new show when season 4 hasn't even happened yet. "Very excited for this but WHEN IS SEASON 4 COMING OUT," someone commented. (FYI: Yellowstone has finished filming season 4, so it'll likely premiere in June like in previous years.)

Despite the excitement, there are some fans who are apprehensive about signing up for another streaming service. Unlike Yellowstone, Y: 1883 won't air on cable, which means fans will have to purchase Paramount+ in addition to their current cable package. Paramount+ (now called CBS All Access) will launch on March 4 with thousands of shows, movies, and live programs from CBS, BET, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, MTV, Paramount Network and many more channels. Pricing details haven't been confirmed, but it's expected to follow the same format as CBS All Access: $5.99 a month for access to its library with limited commercials or $9.99 a month with no commercials whatsoever.
