All About Zoe Saldaña's 3 Adorable Sons
She's the proud mama of twins Cy and Bowie and their younger brother Zen.
In addition to starring roles in the Avatar, Star Trek, and Guardians of the Galaxy franchises, Zoe Saldaña's resume includes being a mother to three boys. And if her online presence is any indication, it's one of the actress's favorite roles. In a 2022 Instagram post featuring photos with her boys, Saldaña wrote "My reason, my destiny, my mirrors. On Mother’s Day I have you to thank. I hold you responsible for my sleepless nights, my guilt, my painful growth, my salty tears, my endless obsession with being responsible for you- for all that, I thank you. If by any chance time were to stop and my life would hit a reset, I would still choose you, a million times over."
Saldaña shares twins Cy and Bowie and their younger brother Zen with her husband, producer and director Marco Perego-Saldaña. They choose to keep much of their family life private. “Marco and I have a great deal of respect for the privacy of our kids," Saldaña told People in a 2017 interview. “We have to choose for them and part of that is giving them the anonymity that they need so that they can feel safe and not aware of anything around them." But Saldaña does share the occasional sweet snap of their family life over on Instagram, whether it's her three boys visiting her on set or having fun on family vacation. She speaks frankly about motherhood and all its highs and lows. In one post from March 2023, Saldaña wrote, "Being your mother is such a treat. The laughs, the jokes, the @lego pieces everywhere, the brawls, the meltdowns, the milestones that ache so deeply, the achievements that make our hearts burst."

Twins Cy Aridio and Bowie Ezio
Saldaña gave birth to identicle twin boys Cy Aridio and Bowie Ezio on November 27, 2014, People reported. She announced their arrival with a tweet in early January that read "Happy #2015 ! Starting our #NewYear with a full house. Our boys are finally here! Thank U 4 all the beautiful wishes!"
Saldaña shared bits of her parenting philosophy in a 2017 interview with People. One of the things she hopes will contribute to "happy, stress-free boys" is hosting all of her boys' playdates at her house, rather than having them go to friends' homes. "You can always come to our house, our doors are open," Saldaña said. "But we don’t ever want them to be exposed to negligence, or to someone getting angry with them for just being boys.” No room in their home is off limits to the boys, Saldaña told Architectural Digest. In addition to a family room and playroom designed with kids in mind, they have a garden where they grow plants as a family.
The couple honors their heritage by raising their boys to speak English, Italian, and Spanish. (Saldaña's parents are Dominican and Puerto Rican, and Perego-Saldaña is Italian.) She told People "They understand all three languages, and they also choose who they speak the languages with. So with their Italian grandparents they will speak in Italian, with their [Spanish-speaking] grandparents they speak in Spanish, and with Mama and Papa they will speak back in English—but they understand in any language we speak to them."
Saldaña discussed how her sons have reacted to her work in a 2022 interview with InStyle. Speaking about her youngest, she said, "I see how he's trying to place me in his mind like, 'OK, you're mama, but you're also Gamora...They're going to watch these movies, and it's going to be a part of what they like and what excites them. And the fact that that gives me street cred with my kids, it's fun, it's great." She shared a photo of her sons visiting her on set in full green Gamora makeup in October 2023, captioning it "Being on the road is hard when you’re away from your children. To all the moms out there making the ultimate sacrifice for their dreams. Those dreams are theirs too! Trust the process… #momlife."
Zen Anton Hilario
Zen Anton Hilario Perego-Saldaña was born on Dec. 12, 2016. She announced his birth on Instagram in early 2017, saying "Marco and I are elated to share the news of the the birth of our son Zen. We couldn’t feel more blessed with the new addition to our family. #threeboys... oh boy!"
Though she has yet to share details on Zen's birth, Saldaña hinted at the story in a 2017 interview with People. “When the time comes and our third baby is a little older, and all the forces that helped us have him with us are comfortable then we will share it because we know it would be very positive and inspiring to many families that are looking to complete themselves and are not able to do it in the conventional way," Saldaña said. "Seeking alternative ways to start a family should be encouraged, should be empowered and I think we should spread that education, that information out there, when the time is right.”
In 2018, Saldaña told People how her older sons were adjusting to their new brother. "They’re identical twins and they’re really attached at the hip and their connection is really majestic. So it takes a lot of conscious action to not forget about Zen—but Zen never lets them forget either. He’s really persistent.”
