When used in interiors, natural materials lend a grounding, organic appeal with their warm and textural elements. And when it comes to jute, this hardy material is no longer the coarse, prickly beast you might be thinking of. Instead, jute rugs have become a staple in homes due to their soft yet durable qualities that work well with almost any scheme.

Jute has become increasingly popular in recent years and shows no signs of slowing. Adding effortless texture and cosiness to your home, jute rugs are a great way to ground a space without taking away from other key features like fabrics and artwork.

Made from the fibre of jute plants found in Asia, jute is known for its durable properties – yet this hardy material is still surprisingly soft. Why? Well, modern-day jute rugs are made from the plant's stem (not the leaves) which almost resembles wool. The fibres are spun to create strong, long-lasting threads, offering a thick, cushion-like feel underfoot.

Not only is this natural fibre an easy way to incorporate eco-conscious elements into the home, but jute is also a stylish addition that works well in any room – particularly high-traffic areas and rooms with neutral or minimalist schemes.

'Hardwearing, durable, and naturally dirt-repellent, jute rugs are the ideal option for kitchens, hallways, and living rooms,' says Clare Walsh, brand expert at Kukoon Rugs. 'Their neutral colour palette also pairs well with most interior shades and trends and offers a versatile floor-covering option.'

How to care for a jute rug

'To maintain the beauty of your jute rug, I’d recommend giving it a regular vacuum to prevent dirt from building up,' suggests Clare. 'Opt for a suction-style vacuum – not a brush – to avoid damaging the jute pile, and vacuum in several directions to remove as much dirt, dust and debris as possible.'

When it comes to spills, Clare recommends acting fast. ‘The quicker you react to a spillage, the more chance you’ll have of removing the stain. Using a paper towel, blot up any excess liquid as quickly as possible. Avoid scrubbing as this can damage the fibres and will likely push the spill further into the rug.'

If opting for a jute rug, there are a few things to consider. 'Jute rugs, due to their natural quality, will slightly vary in colour and shape from piece to piece. To maintain the colour and prevent uneven fading, rotate yours every couple of months. If any threads or loops come loose, simply tuck them back in or use a little super glue or scissors to trim off with scissors if needed,' adds Clare.
