The Best Room At… Viceroy Ombria Algarve, Portugal

There are certain resort hotels that have everything you need and, by design, you never have to leave—that’s the beauty. Viceroy Ombria Algarve, one of the newest additions to the Viceroy luxury hotel chain, is one of those “has everything” hotels. So when I visited Portugal for the first time, I knew there would be a fair chance I wouldn’t learn much about the region outside the resort’s lush 13-acre sprawl. I was wrong.

From locally-sourced wine lists to the woven cotton blankets draped over the suite beds, each detail is a nod to the surrounding Algarve region. Add an 18-hole golf course with panoramic mountain views and a brand new wellness spa, and you’ve got everything you need to go full ‘DND.’ Surrounded by burnt orange landscapes, gauzy sunsets, and crisp white-and-blue accents—with a Portuguese twist on an Aperol spritz in hand—is a great way to drop off the map for a while.

But if you do decide to venture into town, Viceroy’s partnerships with local businesses offer a variety of adventurous itinerary options. Wander through a bustling fish market in the neighboring city of Loulé and choose something fresh to have prepared by the hotel chef, or take a beekeeping workshop at a local family-owned farm. You'll have great dinner stories for your travel companions who kept watch over your pool lounger.

We always recommend visiting "Fonte da Benémola," a beautiful natural area just a short distance away. It’s a peaceful spot with a small river, freshwater springs, and lush greenery, making it perfect for a relaxing hike or a quiet picnic. The area is home to unique plants and wildlife, offering visitors a chance to connect with nature.
