The answers you have been so desperately yearning for about yourself, your friends, and your family don't just sit at the tip of an astrologers' tongue, or in the fortuitous residue at the bottom of a coffee cup. A lesser-known form of astrology is arguing that the answers your heart so desires may well lie within a pack of playing cards. Reader, welcome to the weird and wonderful world of cardology.

As the name suggests, cardology is the study of the mystical science of playing cards. All that anybody needs to practice is a pack of cards. 'Cardology is great,' astrologist and cardology mentor, Francesca Oddie, tells ELLE UK. 'Because it's the same with tarot, once you know how to, you can use cards to tell you about your skills, talents, pitfalls, things you need to watch out for, and then you can also predict the future with them.'

Cardology essentially assigns a playing card to every day of the year. These 'birth cards' are then used to make yearly predictions akin to astrology. Contrasted to astrology, which is believed to require more divination, cardology is formulaic; and it's in this formula that people are increasingly finding answers to their existential conundrums.

Oddie has noted a spike in people booking cardology bookings, with the idea being that people are increasingly attracted to the 'science' behind the secrets of the playing cards. The understanding is that because every birthday is assigned a playing card, there is less room for misinterpretation.

'I became interested in cardology when I became frustrated with the fact that astrology wasn't giving me all the answers I wanted,' Oddie says. 'I feel like everybody's going to be using cards to read their future soon because it's essentially a combination of numerology and astrology, which is what everybody who's anybody giving astrological advice on TikTok is already into.'

Supply for cardology readings has far outstripped demand of late, which has informed an eruption in people yearning to teach themselves the mystical meaning of their lives. Just because cardology is practiced with cards that we may already have lying around, Oddie warns, doesn't make it a reason to try reading yours at home yourself. 'This is still something that requires a really thorough grounding and understanding otherwise people can get it really wrong,' she advises. 'But if you have a cardology reading, you will be defined by the cards and their reading of you like nothing else.'
