Since July last year Ikea has released four drops of its 80th anniversary Nytillverkad collection, offering a fresh new take on some of its most popular products from the last eight decades. The retro favourites just keep on coming because this time, two iconic bestsellers are getting a colourful update.

Unveiled during Milan Design Week, the Swedish retailer's Poäng armchair and Klippan sofa has undergone a makeover as part of the new Nytillverkad V collection; its most special iteration yet.

Few products embody Scandinavian design and Ikea design principles better than Poäng and Klippan, and drawing inspiration from the bold aesthetics of the 1980s, the fifth Nytillverkad drop features a vibrant colour palette, straight lines and a minimalistic expression, all with a contemporary twist.

'Both Klippan and Poäng represent more than just furniture; they symbolise our commitment to creating long-lasting designs that truly improve people's lives and homes over the years,' says Johan Ejdemo, global design manager at Ikea of Sweden.

It's a significant launch too. Both products were originally designed by renowned Japanese designer Noboru Nakamura. He updated Poäng and Klippan for this new collection shortly before he passed away in April 2023.

Here's a first look at these revamped designs which will be on sale this summer...

KLIPPAN

In the late 1970s, product developer Lars Engman asked Noboru to make a sturdy sofa for young families. It had to withstand the everyday play of children and be designed with soft corners and removable washable covers, plus it had to be sold at an affordable price.

Today, the Klippan sofa is a true Ikea classic that's remained relevant for nearly half a century. There have been hundreds of different covers over the years since its debut in the 1980 Ikea catalogue, and new for 2024, Ikea is re-introducing the soft, puffy covers from the 1984 edition in bright red, blue and yellow. Each cover will come in a matching textile bag.

POÄNG

The Poäng chair is without doubt one of Ikea’s most popular and recognisable products to date. Its easygoing looks and low price (you can buy one for £80) have been key to its long reign, alongside its U-shaped cantilever design with a gentle flex, and the undeniable feeling of comfort as soon as you take a seat.

Poäng was first introduced as Poem in 1977, and it's also undergone its own transformation over the years. Noboru was asked out of retirement to make a new version of his popular armchair. The result? A compact and sleek low-back version with no headrest to promote more socialising and less snoozing. The seating angle has also been adapted to ensure a more active posture.

The seat covers will be available in beige, red and black, with either a natural birch, red or black frame.
