This is the full name Prince George will use at school

On Tuesday, the world watched as Prince George arrived for his first day of school at Thomas’s Battersea. Looking slightly nervous (but still adorable), the four-year-old Prince walked in stride with his proud dad Prince William before shaking hands with Helen Haslem, the head of Lower School.

But how exactly would Ms. Haslem — and the other students — address George?

His official title is Prince George of Cambridge, but according to the Guardian, he will go by the name George Cambridge while at school. The little prince even had a label on his backpack saying just that.

As usual, George was dressed to impress. In addition to the backpack, the prince was decked out in a blue school sweater, Bermuda shorts and black penny loafers — the uniform list on the school’s website boasts 24 items totalling $587 CAD.

So, why all the fuss about his name anyway? According to the royal family’s website, people often ask whether members of the Royal Family have a surname, and, if so, what it is.

“Just as children can take their surnames from their father, so sovereigns normally take the name of their ‘House’ from their father,” the website states. So Royal Family members could be known both by the name of the Royal house as well as by a surname, which aren’t always the same.

Sometimes they don’t use a surname at all.

“For the most part, members of the Royal Family who are entitled to the style and dignity of HRH Prince or Princess do not need a surname, but if at any time any of them do need a surname (such as upon marriage), that surname is Mountbatten-Windsor.”

Aside from George, many on social media took note of how gorgeous George’s new teacher is!

Haslem channeled Kate Middleton (who wasn’t present due to severe morning sickness) in a knee-length pink L.K. Bennett frock — one of the Duchess’s favourite labels.
