‘Good Samaritan’ saves kittens from threat of harm with help of Kansas City animal shelter
A Kansas City area animal shelter took in a litter of kittens after their previous owner threatened to throw them in the trash.
Someone trying to sell a group of three-week-old kittens for $18 threatened to throw them in the trash, Great Plains SPCA said in a Facebook post Thursday. A “good Samaritan” heard about the threat and stepped up to save their lives, the shelter said.
“It seems like this guy had $18 in his pocket and said, ‘don’t kill these kittens, I’ll take them,’” said Matt Finucane, adoptions manager at Great Plains SPCA.
After the man bought the kittens, he reached out to the Great Plains SPCA HERO team for help. The HERO team provides outreach, education on animal care, and direct services to animals in need.
The kittens, four in total, are now together in a foster home receiving care before they can be available for adoption. Finucane said the road ahead would include a five-week stay at their foster home. Once they reach two-months old, and if they weigh at least two pounds, the animal shelter will spay and neuter them.
“Typically kittens, once they become available, are adopted within a week or two,” Finucane said, adding that kittens typically get adopted quicker than dogs.
When multiple kittens from the same litter come into the shelter or foster homes, the shelter encourages potential adopters to take in more than one. It’s better for two kittens from the same litter to stay together, Finucane said.
Those who adopt one kitten are offered a half-off adoption price for a second kitten.
“A kitten that’s by itself is far more likely to be swatty and bitey and a little more rough with people, whereas the ones who stay together are going to socialize a lot better with people,” Finucane said.
Great Plains SPCA is located just south of Kansas City at 5424 Antioch Drive in Merriam, Kansas. The shelter welcomes walk in adoptions Wednesday through Sunday. On Monday and Tuesday, the shelter is open for appointments only.
